and it didn't have anything to do with the series? could they replicate Star Trek's success (honestly, it wouldn't take much to beat out the original movies take)? would the fan base accept a movie minus all the beloved characters (except Buffy) and possibly Joss?

Don't have a lot of interest there. It could be ok but the fan base is loyal to the Joss and the characters set in the shows (Buffy and Angel). Most pretend the movie never existed and the people responsible for the movie making another one is meh.

this really just seems like an attempt to cash in by the people who screwed it up the first time then wanted nothing to do with the tv show yet demanded their share of the profits from it when it was successful. it'll do well simply because people that enjoyed the show but aren't following it closely will go and expect what they won't be getting.

I liked the original movie and was disappointed when the "johnny come lately" TV series didn't seem related to it at all. From the article, their basic premise makes sense - it's been a while, it's time for a new Slayer to take the job. The only real problem with it that I can see is the horde of rabid series fans who are going to freak out about it.
I'm glad Abrams wasn't dissuaded from making the Trek relaunch, it was an awesome movie. This movie could be great, too, but I'm betting there's a good chance that the fan reaction could kill it.

I much prefer the TV show. I don't really care about the movie as long as they don't try and use the history of the TV show as foundation. In other words, like Joss ignored the first movie, the second movie would have to ignore the TV show.

What would be the odds of the next slayer also being named Buffy?

The Stark Trek relaunch was made by talented people. So far, this new Buffy movie seems to be because someone who has only made one crappy movie holds the rights and would like to see some revenue now that their residuals from syndication and DVD have dried up. They don't have a real premise to speak of and there is no actual talent involved yet. If they get a decent writer onboard I might be interested but even then they will need a new director to make anything of it.

The whole thing may actually be a ploy to get Whedon or Fox or somebody to buy the movie rights from the Kuzuis (Kuszuii?) at an inflated rate. Threatening to make another crappy movie, one that will probably damage the value of the franchise as a whole, is a good way to make the interested parties get out their checkbooks.

They could just adapt Joss Whedon's Fray for the big screen. I pity the person who decides to make a Buffy movie against Joss Whedon's wishes. Whedonites are people you do not want to cross.

What if in this movie your favorite sexy blonde actress bares all? Can that save a Buffy movie without Whedon's blessing?
