American films, obviously. Only American? So I can't have Das Boot, or Lawrence of Arabia, or The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, or City of God? Lame :p Favourite 10 in no order and some are not American: Godfather Godfather II Das Boot Alien Good, the Bad and the Ugly Lawrence of Arabia Apocalypse Now Pulp Fiction Bladerunner City of God It's hard to list just 10...

I must have terrible taste. I like so few of the movies mentioned so far I find it almost hard to believe.
Matter of fact, other than Star Wars and The Princess Bride I think the entire thread is so far devoid of movies I actually had fun watching.

Not particularly no. Do I like the story? Sure. But I damned if I can stand sitting through that movie.

Because it was handy, here's a list I kept of my top 20 as put up by me on the YMDB site (which appears to be currently down/gone?) a year or two ago.
1. Notorious (1946) 2. Blood Simple (1984) 3. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) 4. Amélie (2001) 5. Being John Malkovich (1999) 6. Singin' in the Rain (1952) 7. Blue Velvet (1986) 8. City Lights (1931) 9. Three Colors: Blue (1993) 10. Mary Poppins (1964) 11. Lovely & Amazing (2001) 12. Nosferatu (1922) 13. Manhattan (1979) 14. Magnolia (1999) 15. Toy Story 2 (1999) 16. Safe (1995) 17. Roman Holiday (1953) 18. Election (1999) 19. Your Friends & Neighbors (1998) 20. Lilo & Stitch (2002)
Runners up: Run Lola Run A Room With A View When Harry Met Sally Beauty and the Beast (Disney's) This Is Spinal Tap
It still looks pretty good to me, except I sort of find myself wondering now (as great as the film is) why I chose to put Your Friends & Neighbors on the list over many other films I love.

Given I haven't seen anywhere near every film ever made and even if I could I likely wouldn't remember what I thought of each by the end I'll stick with just some of my own personal favorites (random order).
Papillon Seven 2001: A Space Odyssey Never Cry Wolf Shawshank Redemption, The Magnolia Being There Sling Blade Groundhog Day Donnie Darko Mulholland Drive Pi Network Heavy Fight Club Breaking the Waves They Shoot Horses, Don't They? Fisher King, The Buffalo 66 What's Eating Gilbert Grape

Another McQueen classic, and it's in my top 15. Hell, add Cincinatti Kid to that list.

I'm not much of a fan of old classics. To me, the acting always seems overblown and cheesy. With that in mind... Lord of the Rings (the whole thing) Schindler's List Saving Private Ryan Patton Vanilla Sky Nosferatu (1922) Godfather Finding Nemo 2 others to be named later, when I'm awake.

My Top 10. These are not the "best" movies ever in terms of direction, acting, etc., but they're certainly my favorites. The top 4 are set in stone, the rest change depending on my mood:
1. Star Wars original trilogy (I'm counting these as one for simplicity's sake) 2. Lord of the Rings trilogy (ditto here) 3. Spirited Away 4. Braveheart 5. The Usual Suspects 6. Airplane 7. Young Frankenstein 8. Clerks 9. Raiders of the Lost Ark 10. Grave of the Fireflies

There are alot of good movies listed here. I tend to think of my top 10 list as those movies you can watch over and over again without it ever getting stale and/or those that have left a permanent emotional mark on me in some way. Here's mine: [list=1] - Alice Adams (1935) - Katharine Hepburn
- Star Wars - A New Hope (1977)
- The Terrornauts (1967)
- Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
- Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
- Moonraker (1979)
- Ffolkes (1980)
- Secret of My Success (1987)
- Shakespeare in Love (1998)
- Smokey & the Bandit (1977)

1) Shawshank Redemption (despite TNT's best efforts to force feed this to the public, kinda like the Celion Dion theme from Titanic, I still love it) 2) Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back 3) Raiders of the Lost Ark 4) The Lord of the Rings 5) Jaws 6) Aliens 7) Young Frankenstein Raising Arizona ("These blow up in the funny shapes and all?" "Well no, unless round is funny.") 9) For Rosanna 10) The Terminator My personal Top 10 List is all the movies I can watch again and again. The Top 5 are usually pretty consistent, but the Bottom 5 tend to fluctuate.

Moonraker? Did that leave a "permanent emotional mark" on you? I know I was moved when Jaws and random Swiss girl fell in love, but still...
