I have an unlimited data plan that no longer is offered by Verizon. I am now month to month and out of contract. If I renew (and thus get the 'deal' on the new phone) they will force me into a 2GB plan for more money...

So what is the best way to keep my plan? Do I need to buy a phone at full price and stay month to month? Can I buy any phone and connect it?  Are there 'discount cell phone stores'?

Didn't want to hijack R's thread about AT&T...

Weird they won't let you get a subsidized phone and keep your plan, but your best option is a buy a phone that will work on Verizon network and transfer your sim card to the new phone.

Are you on an iPhone?  If so, I'd try renewing at the Apple Store where you have a good chance of getting better customer service.

Otherwise, I'd call customer service and say that you've been a loyal customer for X years and you'd really like to get a new contract but you'd like to grandfather your plan.

Don't they throttle grandfathered plans after 2 GB anyway?  Maybe even after less than that.

As far as I know, zero chance of this happening. You have to pay an unsubsidized price for a new phone or give up the unlimited data.

This made me laugh in sympathy for a different grandfathered reason -- I'm grandfathered into a 1998 (!) era limited voice plan, something like $25 a month for 30 (maybe 45 now) minutes/month anytime calling. It was $19.99 originally. They don't offer that anymore afik. It's ideal for me because I rarely use my iPhone for calling but constantly for data. So I got an excessive 4GB hotspot (I think a 2G would be adequate for me if it was offered on hotspot plans) data plan so I could use my iPad with it on occasion and go nuts data-wise without worry.

I got my first iPhone (first smartphone) in Oct. 2012 via Apple's site per some recommendations to do that rather than visit a Verizon store, and it was all handled very smoothly, fwiw.

fwiw, at least with my cheapy voice plan Verizon did let me carry it over from a brick Nokia to an iPhone. Certainly though that's a whole different ball of wax than an unlimited data plan.  icon_neutral

This.... I've tried myself. In fact, I have heard of cases where if you buy a full priced 4G phone, they pull you off because the unlimited plan was supposedly 3G only.

I think they have recently bumped the bandwidth up to 3Gigs now.

ATB doesn't strike me as an iPhone guy. I am guessing Android.

I didn't want to give up my unlimited at the time either, but I have been on 2gb/month plan for 2 years now I think. The only time it's a problem is when I was doing a lot of traveling. Otherwise, I never even get close to to the max. I know, that's not the point, I am just saying, it isn't that bad losing unlimited. Unless you travel a lot, then it's miserable.

If you can then buy a Nexus 5 and stay off contract. I saw the light last year and I'm a lot richer now for it. To the tune of about $40 bucks per month richer.

Yup, I just went through the exact same process about 4 months ago with Verizon.  I actually held onto my phone for about two years as things slowly fell apart on it (volume control stopped working, etc.) because I didn't want to lose that unlimited plan.  Finally the charge port on it stopped working and I had no choice.  When getting the new phone, they told me it wasn't possible to keep my unlimited data plan.

Apparently verizon doesn't support the Nexus 5...

Ugh. I would say that it might be time to dump verizon, but they are clearly the best provider, IMO.

Not sure what to do.

My Thunderbolt is 3 years old so I have been month to month for the last year. The choice seems to be getting a new phone on ebay and swapping the SIM card or losing my unlimited data plan in order to get the roughly $200 discount on a new phone from Verizon. I usually don't use anywhere near 2 Gigs a month, but it's nice to have unlimited data and not worry about it.

I have a Droid Charge and it is also quite old at this point.  I am grandfathered onto the unlimited data plan and am in the exact same scenario as you are ATB.  I currently stream about 5-7Gb of data per month at 4G speeds but replacing the phone can be expensive.  I have a co-worker that had the same situation and paid $700 for a new Samsung Note 3 and they swapped it out without changing his unlimited plan at all, so I believe that is your only option, but I don't think it has to be a brand new phone.  My fiance is on the same account as I, but has a standard 3Gb plan, and she never uses any data.  She qualifies for a new subsidized phone in a month and I was thinking of just transferring her Razor Max from her plan onto mine instead of trading it in for the measly $50 they give.  She gets a new phone, I get her 2 year old phone and keep my unlimited data, everyone wins.

Same here. Exactly. They did give me 6 instead of 2 for my troubles. They said they had some offer running for people in this situation. This was only about 2 months ago.

Sorry for the tease then slow response. They bumped it up from 2 gb to 6 for the same price. They said they had a offer going on. That's all I know. We had unlimited also, never came close to 2
Gb even. We use wifi ALOT.
