There are a ton of threads about various Android phones but I'm looking for a specific bit of data so unfortunately I've started another.

I'm considering converting my current VZW Wireless Data only device (Verizon MiFi) to a voice + data device so I can have a personal phone rather than carrying my corp device with me on the weekends when I'd really rather not get my work emails.  In order to do this, I'd figure I need a Droid phone that can act as a WiFi hotspot to share it's data connection.

Questions - can they all do this?  Is it a part of the OS or is it an App only available in certain versions or devices?  Are there limits to the # of WiFi devices that can connect (ideally I'd want 3+)?

I'm considering the HTC Incredible and some of the Motorola Droid devices, depending on size.

There was a post on Engadget just today the the Incredible would be getting a firmware update very soon that enables 3G Wireless Hotspot.  Currently it has only wired support.

I believe there is also an additional charge to do this above and beyond the standard data plan.  When I picked up my Incredible, they weren't to sure what that was (since it had only been out for like 3 days).

Might get stuck waiting awhile for one since I think the OLED screens HTCs uses are backordered or something. But yeah Incredible just got an OTA update to have wifi hotspot, I believe the new Droid X has it already built in but I'd have to double check that.

I believe the Palm Pre Plus (not an Android phone) has free Wi-Fi hotspot capability. I believe Verizon even advertises this. Of course it's not an Android phone.

Also, it is worth mentioning, that Froyo (Android OS 2.2), will have wireless tethering out of the box.  Google has stated that Carriers will be able to enable/disable it.

It is also worth mentioning, that if you root your phone, you can use a program like PDAnet, and tether before Froyo is released.

PDANet works just fine without rooting.

Except you have to pay for it to access https sites ($10 if memory serves), and it's not WiFi Hotspot capable. There are programs you can get for absolutely free that give you that feature (in addition to what Froyo will have built in assuming the carriers don't disable it), but said program requires root. Saw a link for it yesterday and forgot what it was called.

And yes, the Pre on Verizon offers free tethering, but I don't know if it's WiFi Hotspot capable off the top of my head.

Yes it is WiFi Hotspot capable, per a co-worker who has one.

I am still waiting for the phone I want (the Incredible) to get the feature I want (Froyo's WiFi Hotspot).

I am quite annoyed to have to wait this long.

If the rumors are true, and they seem to be solid rumors...hmmm...if that's even possible  icon_lol, 2.2 upgrade for the Incredible starts rolling out on Friday, 8/27.

I have the Droid X and it also has 3g hot spot preloaded. Works good too smile. I think the new Droid 2 also has it and Incredible is getting it. But please read about Incredible battery life. The X blows it out of the water.

The X is also the size of a fucking brick.  It is entirely out of the question.

My DX fits my hand perfectly. Took some getting used to though.

I loved the Incredible except that it was worthless in the sun.

Works great (and for free) on my rooted Evo. Program is called Wireless Tether and it's available over here absolutely free AND it works on your current version (Android 2.1) of your ROM. You just need root.

Yeah I don't want to dick around with that.  If I wanted to fuck around with non-supported stuff, I'd just reactivate my iPhone and Jailbreak the sumbitch.

Well that was a bit of fortuitous whining:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/27/verizon-confirms-android-2-2-update-for-droid-incredible-hits-to/

Looks like I'm off to the Verizon store sometime this weekend.

Or I could just go to the Verizon store this morning and order my phone.  It'll be here Tuesday.  I hope it doesn't suck.

It's a good phone. The screen is just useless in direct sunlight.

Not sure if it applies, but if you use your phone as a WiFi Hotspot on a 3G network, chances are you can not make/recieve calls during that time. (At least it's so with Sprint's 3G and the EVO/Epic).  It should have that capability on 4G when it rolls out.

Great point, but as the device it is replacing can't ever make any phone calls, I accept this as a limitation smile.

So I've been playing with it this afternoon - it's rather clunky compared to an iPhone, but it'll get the job done I think.  The Google Voice integration really is super slick.

Get that. Along with Tasker, it streamlines a lot of things that might get annoying. Along with Astro File manager. After being on Android it would be really hard for me to go back to an iPhone.
