Why not just marry a Canadian?  Purge can meet you in Toronto for a quickie wedding.  You just have to stay married like, what...2 or 3 years?  After Canada recognizes you guys are serious, they'll send your citizenship request right up the ladder.  You MAY have to submit a sex tape of you and Purge engaged in a "Rusty Trombone" or perhaps a "Cleveland Steamer" to the appropriate governmental department as evidence that it's not a scam, but you guys can grin and bear it for one night, right?

Nobody mentioned Canada's nationalized health care system:
http://www.canadian-healthcare.org/

Of course you can't discuss the topic of health care here (as in, in the U.S.) without everyone screaming about something. But if you're used to how healthcare works here (for better or worse), then you should probably do some research about Canada's system so you'd know how things would be different (for better or worse). I say "better or worse" cause as with everything on the Internet, you can find 1 million sites saying it's the worst health care system ever, and 1 million saying it's the best. icon_neutral

I can say my current provider in Virginia has botched up my bill mailings all year, and canceled and re-activated my account on one recent day while I talked to probably 4 different people in member services over the span of 2 months trying to fix a billing/paperwork issue that was not my fault. So can Canada's system be any worse? If you move there, let me know.  icon_smile

we could always drug him, take all his ID, burn off his fingerprints, replace his teeth and give him a partial face lift so there's no way he could prove it's him.  after that we just dump him up north and they'll have no choice to keep him.  it'd be the quicker and less painful than having to court Purge.

As for your first comment, Blackadar has a point.  What's with the veiled threat?

As for your second comment, have you ever thought that a lot of us are incredibly smart people and we remember a great, great deal more than you'd expect?  I know I personally bookmark zero threads, but that doesn't mean I don't have quite the ability to remember a great many things.

Blacky's post was a veiled insult, but I don't really need to tell you that since you already know.

As for your second comment, I think some of you need to get a life outside of what goes on here in this forum. Dredging up threads of someone's from 6 yrs ago is a bit creepy, actually.

I have a really good memory, remembered what you did, and used the forum search to locate the threads.  It's not like I care what your career is or when you posted it.  I wasn't a member of either of these forums in 2005.  Be creeped out if you want.  Your feelings about my memory or research skills mean little to me.

I didn't see Blackadar's post as an insult.  It's also amusing that, in your world, being smart and having good research skills (aka Google-Fu) is creepy.  It's a shame that I can't get paid lots of money putting those skills to use.  Oh, wait . . . .

Sort of. It's kind of complicated. The basic idea is that we have trouble attracting doctors to work in Canada, so we have a shortage of doctors, both in hospitals and as general physicians, where many families including mine simply don't have family doctors and have to do with the use of walk-in clinics. Many doctors simply aren't accepting patients because their lists are already full, and they're also overworked due to this. I've been without a family doctor for about 10 years.

Yeah, I can confirm that that particular stretch of highway is quite dangerous. Highway 69 has always been very dangerous, and so is the 401.  I think it was in February when an 18 wheeler jacknifed across the median, while a guy managed to swerve to avoid it. Might have even been posted here.

Sorry, Zeke, no advice here, although we do have plenty of bus drivers. What we do need is plenty of doctors though. Maybe you can go to med school? slywink

Is this shortage a result of state healthcare system?

I'd say it's more a result of the private healthcare system to the south of us.  All our best doctors would rather open private practices in the US and get paid truckloads for a smaller workload than work in the Canadian healthcare system and get paid the set wage that the healthcare budget allows for.  That's a very simplistic view of it, of course, but basically what it boils down to.

Does a state healthcare system still have any kind of health insurance system?  or is that a business sector that simply doesn't exist in Canada?  I'm just curious.

From past forum readings, there are still benefits such as dental and vision that aren't covered by the government that generate a supplemental insurance market.

I can't speak for Canada, but here in Norway you can buy health insurance, though it doesn't appear to be very common. I got a health insurance plan as part of my new job 2 months ago, which guarantees me faster treatment and second opinions. I tore a ligament in my knee two years ago which required an operation. I got scheduled for that 4 months after my appointment with my doctor (I got in after only 2 months because someone else dropped out). With my current insurance I'd be on the operating table within a month or so.

There are plenty of private clinics, btw. I've been sent to them by regular doctors a couple of times. The state still covers my expenses, but I've also got the option of paying for better service.

Not that I'm complaining. I'm very happy with how the health care system here dealt with my knee injury. That can't have been cheap, yet it cost me next to nothing.

I'd think that over time that would degrade the overall quality of care available.  With the option to go south to make more money that would drain not only the number of doctors but the overall quality of them over a long enough time.

And so you begin to see the crux of the issue. It definitely does degrade the quality. I once waited about 4 hours in a walk-in clinic before I left without being treated, which is the kind of time you'd expect out of a hospital, not a clinic. We even have a medical school in Sudbury that was built to try to attract doctors to Northern Ontario, where the situation is even worse than the rest of Ontario, but before they can even graduate, candidates are offered jobs either in Southern Ontario or across the border, which defeats the purpose. Tax dollars at work.

It does over time, yes.  Same issue with nurses and paramedics in many cases, although it's not a consistent curve - some doctors would rather practice where they're needed most instead of just following the money.

To the question about insurance, some provinces charge a monthly premium which is similar to an insurance premium which covers all the services available under the provinces health plan.  So instead of 'free' health care, you pay x dollars per month and then can use any of the services you need.  There are supplemental insurance policies as well for dental, drug, etc. if you don't have employer provided benefits.
