TV Squad's Flash Gordon First Look

TV Squad has posted a first look at SciFi's new series "Flash Gordon." It's pretty positive with the guy saying he's definitely going to give the show a chance. He also mentioned that he wasn't a fan of the comics at all, which I think means he was less familiar with the character than most.

I think the DVD is coming out in conjunction with the show, because the show premieres Friday the 10th. Looks cool and I'll definitely rewatch the DVD.

Saw an ad for the DVD during the "Who Wants to be a Superhero?" show.  Good placement, that.

From the previews it does'nt appear to follow the movie's plot / setting. Flash is a track star, his dad goes missing into a parallel universe or some sort, and Ming is a military / drug lord type deal?. Still should be cool.

I actually agree with CeeKay on this one.  I'm getting the sneaking suspicion that they are going to bastardize this just like Battlestar Galactica.  Ming a drug lord?  Oh for the love of...  Getting nervous now.

I don't think he's a drug lord, I think he's supposed to be an evil despot from another planet. I think they actually made comparisons to Saddam Hussein with his character when asked about it.

That's what makes it so good!  It's suppose to be cheezy.  They caught the flavor of the original Flash Gordon serials.  Did you ever see the original serials?  That's why I'm worried about this remake.  With zero cheeze (or is it cheese) it won't be Flash Gordon.  Period.

so...ummm.... was I the only one who watched it?  It was pretty tame for a first episode- nothing really stood out.  Here's hoping for the Dresden Files style slow boil and not the Painkiller Jane dullness.

That was not Flash Gordon.  Even the intro title sucked.  It was more like "we don't have money to spend so let's have a majority of the show on Earth and when we go to Mongo let's use a yellow filter to make the Earth trees look alien".  And what's this portal crap?  Am I watching that lame show Stargate?  And the anorexic Dale with her knobby knees - shudder.  She looks like she's ready to die from starvation at a moments notice.  The show seems like a bad made for TV movie.  The only thing they got right is that the actor looks like Flash Gordon should look.

First Battlestar Galactica and now this.  At least I have the original Flash Gordon serials, the 80's movie (which rules) and the Saturday morning cartoon series on DVD, to enjoy.  They can't destroy them for me.

I will watch the next episode and that's it.  If they continue to stay on Earth then this series is a total scam using the Flash Gordon name just to pull suckers in.

First Battlestar Galactica and now this. 

BSG proved they could pull off great visuals and setting without having to use cheap sets. It's almost like they don't have any faith that the show will do well.  Hopefully they do a better job with Tin Man.

I went to buy the DVD at Target yesterday and they were all sold out.  It was kind of surprising.

I actually enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty good overall aside from a moment or two of cheese. I did read a review from a guy that';s watched the first 3 and says the series really ramps it up after the pilot.

It was OK.... agreed that they need to get off Earth and make this an adventure instead of a grown man trying to come to grips with living at home with his overbearing mommy.

I assume it will pick up now that we have set the stage...fingers crossed.

Oh and on the plus side, it also airs on Direct TV's HD network so Flash in HD FTW!

Curiously, I have NO problem with this whatsoever.

I'm also hoping it ramps up as well.  The studio's idea of what Mongo should look like should be downloaded and erased like Zarkon's memory.  As a matter of fact, I think I'll lead an attack on the studio right now...

His mom seems a little young to be his mom. The wife asked me if that was his girlfriend Dale. I had to explain no its not Dale and she's not his girlfriend now.

Yeah, she certainly is. There's some serious female talent in this show. 

I liked the first ep though, and to be honest people weren't that keen on Ming, but I thought Ralston did a good job with him. He looks like he could get pretty ruthless. You also see him driving the "triple the cost" bargain at the beginning of the episode, meaning he's pretty much in control of a lot.

Still watching this, is anyone else? I've actually been enjoying the recent eps more than the pilot. I think with the bounty hunter on earth, there's a good little subplot that they can spend some time exploring.
