http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/OH/transit12.htmlVenus is going to pass between the Sun and Earth today for the last time until 2117. Should be visible in NA starting around 3 PM Pacific and going until Sunset. I'm interested in seeing it since it won't happen again while I am alive.

Well, it's June in Seattle. That means overcast, rain, and 50 degrees. Booo. I wish I could go home and dust off the telescope.

what kind of quitter attitude is that? Quite hard to argue against when you consider that this is the last time it happens this century. The next one will happen in approximately 200 years.

Just took this picture from the roof of my apt building. An amateur astronomer had set up a telescope and was viewing it with a couple of friends. That speck on the Sun is Venus.

A solar funnel! Did you happen to ask what material that was? The plan I downloaded from the internet called for the material used in rear projection screens but that looks like cloth. And I got clouded out when trying to view from my house. At 5:30-6 it was clear. Then 6-8pm all clouds.

Thanks guys! Yes, awesome shot! What camera and filters did you use to take it?
It was bare lens for this one, but earlier in the event I used a mylar-like film solar shield sandwiched in a clear filter in order to protect my sensor from the full sun. The light in the shared image is so warm thanks to fires near the area and of course sunset. I shot it on my D300 on a Sigma 100-300 F4 with a 1.4x teleconverter. I was feeling a bit self-conscious sharing this here as I already posted it on OO, but glad I did.

Dammit. I'm gonna invest in welder's glass for when this happens when I'm 152 years old or whatever. If I live that long, maybe Diablo IV will have just released. Yeah, right.
