That, my friends, is a dust devil. It's pretty much like a tornado, but it tends to be much, much weaker in power.

Unlike a tornado though, it's just spawned out of a turbulant bit of wind, so they can't be predicted at all. Pretty common occurance to see in places like Arizona and the like.

Then again, that one was nothing. I saw one that stopped traffic on one of the major streets here in AZ - the dust devil was as wide as 4 lanes of the road. People on both sides just stopped as it slowly rumbled on by.

I got bad history with tornados.  There was one that ripped through UMD a few years back and I was right next to it when it touched down.  I was actually riding my bike with a rain jacket and it billowed and stopped me immediatley from going anywhere.  ahd to drop and run.  Crazy.

Looked fake to me. At that size it would pick them up and the dust swirling around it would put holes in them. The tent flying looked really fake like it was  on a wire at one corner.

The dust devil I saw was 4 lanes of street wide. It didn't do much but gather up a ton of dust and blow it around like a tornado.

Remember - they're nowhere nearly as powerful as a tornado. Hell - odds are, even if you walked into it, you'd only get pounded by small bits of rock and dust. Yeah, it would hurt, but it doesn't have the power to pick up your average human.

The reason that tent thing flew was because it was light and had a lot of surface for the wind to pick up (like a parachute).
