Been gone all day and hadn't seen anything posted so far on this so....
Happy Veteran's Day! The only vet I'm certain of here is dbt1949 so big thanks to the King of the Smilies. I know vets don't always get the appreciation they deserve but after seeing Band of Brothers last summer and crying my eyes out I have a big heart for the vets.
The important things we do. The freedoms we exercise. The safety we cherish but also take for granted. All these things rest on the shoulders of our vets.
So if you're a vet, post it in here and let us shower you with goodness. If you're not a vet, spend some time in here... um... showering... Yeah, that!

Same as I did at work today for the three veterans there, I thank those of you here that selflessly served for the good of our country. I hope that one day, I may find my own way to likewise contribute to the good of our society.

Yes happy V-Day to all the vets of all the wars and a big THANK YOU for all you do whether you wanted to or not or agreed with it or not. Without you we might not have what we have today.
Id like to send a special thought out to my 20 year old something nephew who is going to Iraq soon. He flies Blackhawk helicopters. Not that many years ago that I was just 8 years old and holding him in my arms as a baby at my grandfather's funeral.

It is Veterans Day / Rememberance Day / Armistice Day again. I am the son of Air Force career enlisted, grandson to a WWII Navy vet, and nephew to a career Marine enlisted. To all of those who have served and all those who serve now, you have my deepest respect and love. Thank you for all of your sacrifices and those who didn't make it home. Thank you for the freedoms that you and your colleagues have fought, bled and died to provide us. There is nothing that we can do for you to come close to what you have given us. In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Ive always been kind of proud and ashamed around this time of year for my service time. Survivors guilt and the crappy way we were treated when we came home has left me a little sad and bitter of those days. I am so glad and proud of our country for doing a 180 and saluting our vets now a days. They deserve it.

Thanks again guys. This day is always bittersweet for me. At least this year I had the good sense to stay home for the day - last year I was just dark and surly all day at work.

A report on the American numbers by Fox News: Today, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are some 23.2 million veterans in the United States. That includes 2.6 million who served during World War II, 2.8 million who served in the Korean War, 7.8 million in the Vietnam War, 5.2 million in the Gulf War and about 1.7 million who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Nearly 120,000 are still stationed in Iraq, and about 68,000 will be deployed in Afghanistan by the end of the year, according to the Census.
Just one American veteran who served in World War I is still alive: 108-year-old Frank Buckles, who drove ambulances in England and France after enlisting at the age of 16. Buckles also fought in World War II and was taken prisoner by the Japanese.

'Technical' Veteran, United States Army, 1991-1992. (Long story short, got to AIT and couldn't breathe, chose to go home early instead of waiting for a medical discharge. Still legally a veteran, fwiw).
That being said? A hearty thank you to everyone who has served, and especially everyone serving today. You have my thanks, and you will always have my support.
Thank you.
