Would have made more sense to get a Japanese actor like Ken Watanabe for the role.

Meh, they're costumes for kids.  Those things are typically cheap, licensed crap.  No need to blame Michael Bay.

Only fear is that it's modeled after the movie, which means sun glasses and a tattoo?

I have to agree after seeing those pics.  This went form as safe of a bet that it would suck to cautiously optimistic.

It looks like they're going for a beefy Gears of War look for those Turtles, especially Raphael who could be Marcus Fenix's long lost cousin.

I don't think it looks too bad.  They seem to have made the turtles look pretty bad ass.  Maybe not the type of movie I'd go gaga for these days, but I'm not 12 anymore either.  slywink

Hopefully they can make a decent video game out of this one.

I'm so used to the animated series voices that it's kind of jarring to hear different voices for the live action turtles.

Trailer is out...and it sucks so bad.  I can't believe some of this stuff gets made.

"lets have Shredder have a big knife."
"NO, lets have him have 30 huge knives!"
"Yeah, more is always better!"

Anyway, I am almost sorry to post it because I feel like I am hurting you all but here you go

I think they're trying to harken back to the 80's version of the Turtles with the personalities. Problem is,  it seems like they're going for half-campy, half-serious, which I don't think is quite working. All at the same time, it just seems so generic. And dare I say it, it almost feels like Bay is spoofing himself with this movie.

He is spoofing himself with the alien comment at the end, at least.

Typically, it's all pretty noise.  Nothing looked terrible to me in any particular way, though.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not much of a TMNT fan.

Everybody wants the dark gritty turtles of the early comics, but the majority of the fan base was built on the 80's pizza-munching surfer dude Turtles. For better or for worse, that's what they are.

I was already outgrowing them when they hit their peak, so I think I just missed the boat.

Keeping that in mind, I think that this looks awesome compared to the original TMNT live-action movies. At least they went a little darker and the turtles look better than guys dressed up in rubber suits. I don't care for the wisecracking dudebro angle, but then again, I've never cared for it in any iteration.

The original Turtles movie (the first one) was actually pretty dark; it was the later sequels where things took a nose dive.  I actually remember that a lot of parents complained when the original came out because of how violent it was.  The turtles used their (bladed) weapons on humans and Shredder was even crushed in a garbage truck.   When you look at the first sequel, the turtles almost stopped using their weapons all together and well… the third one is an abomination.

I still think the suits look pretty good.  Left is the original movie, right is the god-awful third movie.

A little bit of movie trivia for you, Jim Henson’s Creature shop created the original suits and animatronics.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Jim Henson's Creature Shop supplied the four central characters as well as Splinter. Brian Henson was chief puppeteer and also served as second unit director, overseeing the fight scenes. Two separate sets of body suits were made. The heavier, more detailed suits were worn by the principal body performers in most scenes, while a lighter set was engineered explicitly for action and stunt scenes. The suits were divided into 15 pieces, and the faces were controlled via motorized cables, located in the shells. This technology, later refined into the Henson Performance Control System, paved the way for such later productions as Dinosaurs, which used many of the same puppeteers and creatives.

The Creature Shop also provided the creatures for the sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. However, they did not work on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III or the TV series.

Another bit of trivia. The first two Ninja Turtles movies were filmed in my hometown. The first movie was probably our first big box-office success after a string of Dino DeLaurentis and Stephen King movies in the 80s.

This may surprise you...

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' is a Hollow Shell of a Movie

Quote
At one point in the latest iteration of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, our heroes in a half-shell are flying through the sewers on their way back home after a victory against the Foot Clan. After some quick sliding, flipping, skateboarding and more they all go flying towards the entrance back to their home pipe, but all four of them end up getting stuck in the doorway, and Michelangelo farts. That's what Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feels like amidst an onslaught of remakes, reboots and sequels: another fart from the studio system that churns out films like this as if they were delivery pizzas that not even the turtles will eat.

Damn frown

Which reminds me, two weeks ago I had a trip to Vermont. Our route takes us to the Ticonderoga Ferry, and among those waiting was someone with a TMNT license plate. As I got out to stretch my legs while waiting for the ferry, I walked by the vehicle and saw some plushies up on the dash and yelled out, "Cowabunga!" Didn't have the heart to ask what they thought of the upcoming movie.

Wife and I saw it last night and liked it a lot. I went in expecting a much worse movie, but was actually entertained for most of it. The beginning does drag a little.

Spoiler for Hiden:
  • There is a funny line referencing the whole aliens rumors/issues that hit the production early on. Aprils cameraman when first hearing about the turtles says some thing like "So, they are aliens?" and April says "no, that would be stupid"
  • I am not a fan of the current foot clan design. They are just mercs, not ninja's at all
  • The Shredder suit is a bit too much over the top. WAY too much going on and it wasn't needed.
  • The turtles are very gears of warzy, but I got used to it and it worked well.
  • There were a lot of similarities to the original movie. Many similar scenes.
  • Origin was changed to have a direct link to April O' Neil. not sure if I liked that or not, but wasn't a huge deal.
