The endless hype leading up to it was entirely his fault.  Hype that was generated despite having no information about what may or may not be inside (not even an x-ray).

It was a perfect example of the shift in news from fact-based to sensationalism, and Geraldo was at the forefront of it (and asked for it).  He also received

And yet, the lesson the media learned from this was not that this was a horrible, empty tactic that would turn people away from them eventually (sometimes violently).  It was: Hey, look at those ratings!

The fact that Capone's vault was empty wasn't Geraldo's fault.  The fact that it was one of the biggest debacles in televised news history is.
