SHIT is a real acronym. It stood for Ship High in Transit.
Old merchant vessels used to store manure in crates in the lower cargo holds. The problem started when sea water would come into the hold and ferment the manure creating a by-product, methane gas.

Guess what sailors used to check cargo holds at night --- yep you guessed it, torches and lanterns.

So lets look at our equation

Methane Gas + Fire = can any one guess ......  eek

BOOM!

Once they figured this out they wanted to insure this never happened so they labeled the manure crates Ship High in Transit
