Had a dream I was captured by Isis (probably not a good idea to look at images of captured Peshmerga troops being paraded in cages before bed time).

In the dream I'm terrified because I'm familiar with what happens to the people they capture.  I wonder how I'll hold up to their propaganda whether I'll read their statements or if I'll be defiant.

They lead me into a basement and I see bloody hooks on the ceiling and I think to myself 'that's enough for me' and in the dream I close my eyes and then I wake up in real life.

I've been able to do this pretty consistently when having a bad dream for a long time now and it seems to be something happens that is a major stress point- like I can't find one of my kids or I've had a car accident and I realize this isn't real and I don't need to endure this. So I close my eyes and wake up IRL.

It doesn't have to be as traumatic (and it's usually not) as the ISIS dream, it can be something annoying like I can't find my keys or I've made a mistake at work.

When I was a kid I was able to exercise a little bit of agency in my dreams- like controlling what I saw, but nothing consistently.

What about you fellows?

It's called "lucid dreaming" and I remember other threads on the subject... might have been over at OO, however.

I can do lucid dreaming from time to time... sometimes full blown control, sometimes partial control. most times, once I start to get control I wake up.

It's always fun when I find myself in control of my dreams, but the biggest trip is the occasional dream where I'm in control and I also know it's a dream.  I'm basically one with the Matrix at that point, and I can decide I want to be able to fly or manipulate the environment around me to some degree, and I've been able to decide I want to wake up.

I have particular recurring dreams/nightmares. Sometimes I'll realize "ok, this is the tornado dream (or the runaway car dream, or the flying dream, or...), got it" and then I can take some control over its direction or at least enjoy it as entertainment. Other times my subconscious fights back and convinces me that "no, you're not dreaming -- it's real this time," whereupon it becomes even scarier than usual. It's like my subconscious resents my consciousness horning in on its territory. I wonder if that means that dreams can't accomplish whatever mental mojo they do if the conscious mind gets involved. Or maybe I'm just schizophrenic.
