Stranger Things trailer

This looks like a TV show from the 80s written by Stephen King and directed by Steven Spielberg!

I am intrigued.

Netflix really is knocking it out of the park these days with original programing.

For me it feels like they are kind of hit and miss, but more hits than most studios I guess.  This looks like it could be good, as well.

Really excited about this too, although I think I saw a couple places it got mediocre reviews.  But then again I rarely trust "professional" reviews.

My partner and I binged this over the weekend and LOVED it.  This is one of the best shows/movies I've seen in any format in a long, long time.  Very satisfying on all levels.  It's hard to get my partner to sit for even one episode of a show at a time, so you know this show had to be pretty damn good lol.

A few more details for those interested.  It's 8 episodes, approx. 6 hours total, and is more like a single extended movie (or a TV mini-series) than a conventional TV show.  They still break it up like a regular show, which is odd, but I guess that's just the standard.  The creators mention if they do get renewed, it would be more like a "sequel" than a second season.  Also, it's listed in the 4K shows but when you watch it it's cropped like a wider screen movie, so I'm guessing it was filmed in a more conventional format and converted.  The filming and direction are top notch, and they make the most of what was presumably a limited budget.  I need to read up on it some more, as I'm interested to see how much CGI was used and how much was just old fashioned movie magic.

Content-wise, it's a mix between ET, Poltergeist, Carrie (and other Stephen King stuff) with a little Aliens influence for good measure.  That's a pretty damn good pedigree to emulate, and the show creators (two brothers who wrote and directed most of it) do an incredible job of re-creating that kind of atmosphere but modernizing it for todays' audiences.  For example they throw in some of the generic stereotypes of nice girl turned slutty and douchebag jock, but they play around with the characters and develop them further than you'd normally get to see in a short movie.

Winona Ryder makes a fantastic comeback, and the lead adult male is excellent as well.  Still, the kids are the heart of the show, and although all the leads are great, the one toothless kid really steals a lot of the best moments.

The music track is also interesting; if you saw last year's It Follows, it really plays off of that and old 80s flicks.  Again, very well done.

All in all I can't recommend this enough.  Pretty much every one I've mentioned this too has enjoyed it, so I don't think it's just me.  I'm really hoping they renew for a second series.

I was able to watch a couple episodes last night and so far I really like it as well.  I was surprised to see that they are
Spoiler for Hiden:
showing actual monsters and stuff so early.  I expected it to be more along the lines of just teasing for at least the first half of the series.

It definitely feels like they are "paying homage" (or perhaps just ripping off) the aesthetic of Speilberg and such during the 80's, but i think they do it well to set the mood.

I think that's one of the attractive things about this production - it really works as a standalone piece of entertainment.  The pacing is fast but not rushed; most of the ensemble cast gets a fair amount of screen time and individual plot elements.

Ultimately I think most people will enjoy it enough that they want to see more, but as the writers mention, the next "season" would be more like a movie sequel than part 2 of an ongoing series.

Fantastic...best TV show I've seen in a very long time.  We watched it all over two days and loved every episode including the ending.

The good news is season 2 is a go and will be a direct sequel using the same actors.

That's good to hear about the green light for Season 2 with the same cast.  I'm not against the idea of Stranger Things being an anthology like American Horror Story, but I really want to see what comes next for the a season 1 people.
