Not since Six Feet Under has a series captivated me this much.  I'm only half way through season 1, and I'm officially hooked.

The combination of writing, and amazing acting from all but unknown actors makes this a winner.

I'm probably the last person on earth who had never seen this show.. but if you haven't, and you are a fan of gritty TV.. do yourself a favor and get The Wire.

I watched season 1 and thought it was ok. Couple of elements bothered me. Never ventured further into the series.

You're in for a treat, as the series gets better with each season. Now, each season tells a somewhat self-contained story-arch, so when you get to Season 2, you'll get introduced to a whole set of new characters (Season 2 was centered around shady dealings on the docks and crooked teamsters). Season 3 got back to the city's drug dealing problem. Season 4 was centered around the problem of the failing inner city education system. I've yet to watch the final season. Waiting for it to hit DVD soon.

Seasons 1 through 3 were great.  Season 4 made a change in focus I didn't really care for and I felt the final season attempted to return to it's season 1 & 3 roots but doesn't quite reach their level of greatness.

Is this show still running or is it finished? If it is finished did they actually end the show in a satisfactory manner?

I tend not to start shows now until they've ended, and I tend to avoid the ones that never reach a satisfactory ending.

I'm still feeling burned by the way Deadwood just kind of stopped with lots of things half resolved.

Probably the best TV show I've seen.

I think season 1 and 2 represent the best stuff, though.

It's finished.  It wasn't cancelled like Deadwood either- all involved new well in advance that the fifth season would be the last one and it was designed as such.

Season 5 Disks hit next week and I can't wait.  icon_biggrin

And I disagree. Season 4 was brilliant top to bottom.

At this point I think Season 2 is my favorite. I found the the Frank Sobotka storyline entirely riveting which is amazing given it's almost total departure from the focus during season one...yet it all fit so brilliantly.

I cannot wait to see how it all ties up.

Huh, I may just have to put this in my Netflix queue.  I had a friend who was raving about it but I just never started watching it and I tend not to start a series in the middle.

I found all the seasons to be great.  If I had to pick one, I'd probably go with S1 as my favorite.   I'm so glad it was able to get a final season and wrap things up, unlike some other HBO series...  mad

I started watching this like two weeks ago and was hooked. Absolutely amazing show, loved it. I just have season 5 left to watch when it comes out this week. And my favorite season is probably 1, but they are all great.

I will also chime in and say that the Wire has been one of the most enjoyable shows that I have watched on TV.

I recently finished season 1 of a Showtime show called Brotherhood and was extremely impressed. Have any of you watched this show?

It's kind of nice to see that not everyone has the same favorite seasons, so it's not as if it totally went downhill for a couple years or something.

I also love the Wire.  It's turned me off of a lot of the other regular TV shows.  It's one of the shows that you have to watch again, because there are things you miss the first time around.

I personally like season 3 the best in the series, especially what they did with Hamsterdam.

Season 4 was great too, but there wasn't as much closure as the other seasons, but what happens to some of the characters at the end made up for it.  Just wow.

Season 5 is only ten episodes, but wraps up the show nicely.

The hardest part is trying to sell the show to other people to get them to watch.

I enjoyed Brotherhood quite a bit, though I only saw the first season.  One of these days we'll have to rent the second season.  Jason Isaacs was great in it and I liked the look at very "local" politics.

I'm on a hiatus from The Wire at the moment, having watched through Season 3 via Netflix. Damn good show, and will be glad/sad to see it go after watching Season 5. Sad 'cause it's a good show. Glad 'cause it's a good show that quit before outstaying its welcome.

That is an absolute steal. If I thought I'd ever watch them again, I'd be all over that.

I hope they do something like that for BSG when season 4 discs come out.

awesome deal.  too bad I've sworn off buying whole seasons on DVD since I'll usually watch them once and then they'll just sit there collecting dust.  I've actually ended up getting rid of most of my season box sets and only keeping a select few like Buffy, Angel and Firefly.

I'm trying to stay the same way, though I seem to make exceptions for HBO series.  The advantage is that HBO series hold their value pretty well, so I figure if I ever decide to divest myself of them, I should be able to at least break even.

This is now my all-time favorite show. Seasons 3 and 4 are absolutely incredible, but of course they are maximally rewarding if you've seen previous seasons. It's completely addictive, entertaining, enlightening and socially-meaningful. I can't recommend the show enough.

I think part of the reason it didn't get a sizable audience is that it really is novelistic in format-- you just can't jump in the middle. Even shows like the Sopranos with overarching storylines have self-contained storylines in individual episodes. The Wire doesn't do that.

The entire series is on Amazon Prime now if you have that. A lot of HBO shows just got added to it, the notable exception is Game of Thrones.

I'm watching this now for the first time, just finished the first season, and it's certainly good but I'm not on the best TV show of all time bandwagon just yet.  Even on HBO I think Deadwood had a better first season, but I also know The Wire peaks season 3 or 4, so these are just some thoughts after hearing so much about the show for so long.

Season 1, while good, really just sets the stage for the awesomeness that is seasons 3 and 4.  I didn't like Season 2 the first time, but it was infinitely better on a repeat viewing.

I added this to my media watch list and saw the first episode.  Interesting set up with the police and seeing the hierarchy of the drug dealers from the perspective of a young member who needs to prove himself after making a mistake.  I need a few days off to catch up on all the stuff I'd like to watch.

I still never made it past the first season.  I thought it was alright but couldn't see the "best show ever" comments at all.  I've heard things pick up in the second season but can't bring myself to start it up again after so long.

If you didn't like the 1st season, not sure you would like the rest (although Seasons 3 and 4 are incredibly good). I actually thought Season 2 was a bit of a let down, but mainly because they focus on a different set of characters than in the other seasons.

Wrapped up season two.

The writing on this show is SO good.  The way that they layer in depth to every character showing that no one (well maybe a few exceptions) is absolutely good or absolutely evil is astounding.

Also, there's scene where one of the characters is playing an original Xbox. Man that controller was the size of a laptop.  icon_biggrin
