Via the BBC:

Quote
Classic children's cartoon characters The Smurfs are heading to the big screen for their 50th anniversary.

Studios Columbia and Sony have scooped the film rights to the original 1958 Belgian comic book series - which later became a TV show.

The as-yet-untitled film will combine live action and animation.

"We're very excited to introduce a new generation to Papa Smurf and the other Smurfs in all of their glory," said Columbia president Doug Belgrad.

Uh...wow. Why won't they just stay dead?

I'm not overly concerned. I've successfully avoided seeing other animation/live-action train wrecks like Garfield, Alvin & The Chipmunks, and Underdog. I can avoid this one too.

What was Gargamel's deal?  I don't remember why he wanted to eat them.  Was it going to make him immortal or something?  He was a freaky hunchback, why would he want to prolong his own suffering? smile

Part live action? What the hell? There was no live action in the Cartoon. What are going to do, dye someone blue? Or is Gargamel going to be live action?

Not only are they delicious, they are also critical ingredients in a lot of alchemical spells.

That seems sort of odd.  How would anyone know that?  You'd think the Smurfs would have a story about the great Smurf massacre.  Maybe papa smurf was just a baby when it happened and he was the only survivor. They should make the movie about that.

I think Gargamel learned the alchemical properties of Smurfs from his great, great grandfather.  "PUMPERNICKEL PICKLE!"

Maybe that's why there's only one female Smurf. The others got eaten / used to turn lead into gold.

Gargamel created Smurfette.  I thought this was common knowledge.  How the heck did you people pass your citizenship exam?

OK, I would watch that.

Gargamel could create sentient, artificial life forms.  I don't think the gravity of that dawned on me until just now.

They were confused by the hair color change.  Apparently black haired people are evil, while blondes are righteous and good.

A friend pointed this out to me, but the Smurfs show actually had one of the first zombie outbreaks on screens anywhere.  There was an episode (that they will never show due to some racism issues that I'll explain) that had what was then a normal smurf getting bitten, and turning black and angry who would then go around biting other smurfs and turning them into more zombies.

Well, you can see why they banned the episode, since all the smurfs basically became savage zombie-like black skinned smurfs.  But it also turns out this is the reason why Grumpy smurf exists, he was patient zero.

The Hanna Barbera tv cartoon did not have the black smurfs; they were made purple instead. Lazy Smurf gets bitten by a purple gnat and turns purple himself, unable to say anything but "gnat! gnat!" (pronounced "guh-NAT!") The disease is spread by biting the tails of other smurfs, IIRC.

The original French comic book version of the episode is where the offensive stereotyped black colored smurfs were found, I believe.

I don't remember the US cartoon episode having anything to do with Grumpy's origin, but I do remember being a small child running around saying "gnat! gnat!"

Heh, my sister and I used to play "Purple Smurf" when we were little too.  I remember bouncing around my grandparents basement and getting yelled at because we were going to break something.  Funny how that one episode is so memorable.
