13 reviews so far, all negative. The drive-in near my vacation spot is showing this with the Incredible Hulk, and we were thinking about making that an activity one night. Maybe not.

Well, I for one have been eagerly anticipating the day when Hollywood would finally make a mummy movie featuring Chinese abominable snowmen. I can't believe it took them 3 movies to finally figure that out. Hollywood is so out of touch with mainstream America.

You're serious about this, aren't you. And Hollywood did it?

True enough about Hollywood script writers; they wouldn't know a good Yeti if it bit them in the ass.  slywink  But if you want to watch mummies more along the lines of Chinese mythology make sure you watch Tsui Hark's Vampire Hunters. I guarantee you won't see mummies that weird or unique in any other film. No Yetis in it though.  frown

Yeah I had to sit through that trailer before 3 different movies recently and each time I wasn't very impressed. I think the movie could be fun just for the effects and the scale on which it's been done, but I'm guessing there isn't much semblance of a story there.

One of my deepest shames is that I actually LIKE Fraser.  For some reason, he just comes across as a genuinely nice guy.

That being said, I'll probably wait for this one on dvd.

Ebert sort of likes it:

Quote
I was not, however, pleased by "The Mummy Returns" (2001), although it inspired one of my funnier reviews. But "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" is the best in the series, and from the looks of it, the most expensive. And once again it presents the spectacle of undead warriors who are awakened from the slumber of ages, only to be defeated in battle -- this time, by the skeletons of the slaves buried beneath the Great Wall after constructing it (which is a neat trick).

The biggest problem i have with the current Mummy movies with Fraser is how friggin' delicate the damn mummy minions are.  It's hard to work up a sense of dread when a 10 year old kid is able to easily pull the arms off one, while the heat from a glow stick will cause them to burst into flames.

He comes across as a tool. He's one of those guys that you know *is* actually very nice, but you still want to punch him in the face because you know he wouldn't take offense. He'd just laugh it off like a goof, and keep hanging around with you because he has no other friends. He's the lovable oaf that you just want to grab by the shoulders and shake and say, "Look man, you're good looking, you've got a decent physique and a great personality. Stop being such a fucking doof!"

I've never understood the fear of mummies either. Zombies are scary because there are a LOT of them, and they are relentless. There's usually just one mummy, and he spends half the time sleeping.

This one has to be at least marginally better than the second one, although the fact that Rachel Weisz isn't in it is a pretty huge negative. Maria Bello faking a British accent seems to be a weird casting decision to me.

The one positive review I read said the most unbelievable portion of the movie was the fact that they cast a 27-year old to play the 39-year old Fraser's son. Doh.

Seriously, his son looks so much older now and Frasier doesn't look like he aged a day. Hopefully they put in something else as preposterous as out-running in the sun in the 2nd movie.
