Watched Jiro Dreams of Sushi last night...what a wonderful film. I hate sushi, but was absolutely fascinated by the story and the beautiful cinematography.
I've been on a documentary kick lately...any others that I should see?
Can I assume you've already seen King of Kong?

I enjoyed Resurrect Dead about the Toynbee Tiles. And Helvetica is surprisingly entertaining. I really want to see Anvil: The Story of Anvil, Between the Folds, They Killed Sister Dorothy, Who Is Harry Nilsson, Marwencol, and Winnebago Man. I've heard good things about all of them. EDIT: Man on Wire is fantastic. I haven't seen it in a long time, but Thin Blue Line is really good. Everything I mentioned is on Netflix, but I also saw Tabloid recently, and it's great.

Watched The Artist this weekend too. Was very good and a lot more fun then I would have expected. It's another movie like Hugo where its a film about the love of movies. It's a got a nice riches to rags story to it and the main characters are really likable, plus it just looks great. I didn't mind it being a silent picture either and that kinda worked well for home use as there were plenty of times where characters would say things without text accompaniment and you could discuss what you think they said freely.
I can see why it won an Oscar.

Watched "The Hole" the other night. It's a fun horror flick where a family moves in to a home and in the basement they discover a trap door that reveals a bottomless hole. Of course its a pandoras box type thing and bad stuff happens once its open. This could have been a fantastic movie as it has the right cast, story ideas, and writing. But the execution of it is sloppy which makes it a good horror film instead of great one.

The moment someone on the show says, "Hey gang, let's go to Ireland!" just skip to the next season. Trust me. looking at the episodes for that season (3) it appears there were only 4 (8,9,10 & 11) set overseas, then the two remaining episodes are back in Charming, and watching them quickly probably won't be as bad as watching them over a month long period since it won't seem as drawn out. Trust me, you don't want to skip the last episode of the season

If you want a goofy, fun time then check out Todd and the Book of Pure Evil. It's basically Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure meets The Evil Dead. It starts off slow but develops an almost Joss Whedon like storyline by the end of the first season. I had a blast with the show. Atticus steals every scene he's in.

Stake land is now available on instant Netflix. Was pleasantly suprised how good the movie is. It's like a twisted marriage between "The Road" and "Mad Max"....with Vampires.

Watched The Pact last night. Not a bad little horror film. Low budget but doesn't look low budget. Some genuinely creepy moments and a nice little twist ending (that's telegraphed a bit too much towards the middle of the film..but still fun).

It's generally considered a train wreck of a season but I'm sure I like quite a lot of things that are generally considered a train wreck. 10 episodes in, and I'd say Season 4 is more of a train wreck than Season 3. The way they've set up the conflict (and some of the sub-storylines) is interesting, but: So far, the show has been so awesome because there weren't really any completely good guys or completely bad guys. They've changed that dynamic, and the show seems to be worse off for it. Still interested to see how Season 4 ends up though.

If I may humbly make a suggestion for anyone who likes documentaries check out "Craiglist Joe" if you haven't. Interesting premise, I watched it last night really enjoyed it. Didn't enjoy Jiro Dreams of Sushi so much though, didn't finish that one and No Impact Man.

Netflix Canuckistan got Red Tails this past week. I found it pretty damn cheesy, but fun none the less. I thought Terrence Howard put in a fairly convincing performance though as the Colonel in charge of the Tuskegee squadron, lobbying their cause in Washington. A number of the cast were actually quite decent. The funny thing about it is that weakest performances were from the white actors, some of who were just terrible. Well maybe that's fitting considering the subject matter. I'd be comfortable recommending it to any fan of military action films.

I really enjoyed The Hunter starring Willem Dafoe. He plays a hunter that is contracted by a pharma company to track and kill what may be the last Tazmanian tiger in existence and deliver it's genetic material. Slow paced, but well acted and it doesn't take any cheap outs.

Sacrifice is available. I watched it yesterday and it's very good. It reminds me of Twilight Samurai a bit. It's not a martial arts film although it has some fighting. It's more a story about how far a man will go for revenge.

Hoping it picks up then, because I'm fairly unimpressed after 3 episodes. So far, its a wannabe Buffy without the funny or the great dialog.
