The Netflix Instant Watch recommendation thread

I just finished watching all 7 seasons of the Peep Show (a British comedy) and thought it was great.  Of course, 7 of their seasons are like 2 of ours, so that went by relatively quickly.  A bit more wry, dry humor than the broad comedy of Black Books, I'd say, and I quite enjoyed it.

I finished Peep Show a couple weeks ago, then watched That Mitchell and Webb Look and while it had its moments overall wasn't nearly as funny as Peep Show. Now I need to find some more British comedy.

Wow, I had the exact opposite reaction.  TM&WL is one of the best sketch shows I've seen in ages.

I had a REALLY crappy bootleg copy of Battle Royale I bought off ebay before it was brought to the states.   The subtitles would just disappear for minutes on end in the middle of conversations, and people would yell things like, "MY PANTS ARE FANTASTIC!" according to the badly translated sub.  

I look forward to finding out just why those pants were fantastic now.

and the best part is you can choose which language track to listen to: Japanese or the proper English version

I really enjoyed Tucker and Dale vs Evil a lot. Clever little flick that I thought they did a great job with. "Well officer, we have had one DOOZY of a day!"

Everyone should see this movie!

I finally got around to watching this tonight, and fully agree with that assessment.  What a great show.

I would say a good 80 percent of dubbed films end up making me laugh after about 5 minutes.  The talent pool they have access to consists almost entirely of people on helium, a truck driver from Des Moines, or a woman who sounds like a 10 year old.  In addition, if you ever get a chance to watch a subtitled film then listen to a dubbed version, odds are the plot will change somewhat due to the crappy translation to the latter. 

I learned how to read ages ago.  It's like second nature to me now and doesn't really cause me any distress.

The biggest issue with translation VO is that they have to at least vaguely match mouth movement.  As an example, the Japanese language is made up of very quick, short syllables.  That's why dubbed dialogue always seems rushed for Japanese films.  It can also have an effect on what is being said, if the original language either takes more or less time to convey something than English would. 

The high pitched (or even low pitched) voices have to do with this, too.

Wow, Netflix has been getting some heavy hitters lately with new releases. If you are looking for something different, Norwegian Wood is also streaming. It's based on the book by Haruki Murakami. I'm a huge fan of his books but I have not see this movie yet. The reviews have been positive.

Just watched Immortals...sure am glad I didn't waste my money on that in the theater.  What a terrible movie, not even fun as a "turn your brain off" action flick.  Just awful.

For what it's worth I found both Immorts and the new Conan movie entertaining. Not good enough for ticket prices, but on Netflix it was a good time.

I just watched Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles.  Pretty cool doc about these three guys who are trying to figure out just who's been placing tiles into sidewalks and streets on the East Coast and South America for the last 30 years.

Maybe you've even seen one.  They look something like this:




It's not a perfect doc, but it's much better than I was expecting.  There are a couple of moments that seem to go nowhere, but then do tie in eventually.  By the end, it's pretty fascinating stuff.

yep, it's definitely gone, as is the sequel.  from watching Feedfliks 'Just Arrived' feed I've noticed that sometimes they'll only get the rights to stream something for a month or so.

I'll take this time to mention a few things I'm watching of late:

Top Shot -> not in to guns but this is a really fun reality show where top marksmen compete in challenges with all sorts of weaspons new and old. Still watching Season 1.

Farscape -> Still on Season two but really loving it. Had forgotten most of the episodes so its almost watching it new again. And they introduced Harvey this season!

Hogfather -> Based on the Discworld novels. I never read them but the wife did and she was bored to tears - as was I. I did enjoy the overall setup and it looks fantastic but seems like it would be a better book than movie. We stopped about 20 minutes from the end of part 1.

The Experiment (US Remake) -> A bunch of people volunteer for money to take part in an experiement. One group plays the prisioners and the other the officers. The officers have to make sure the rules they are given are followed or they lose out on the money. Things get wrong pretty quick and the worst of humanity comes out. Was just ok. I hear the original version is better so will have to see that at some point.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon -> Hated it but didn't expect much more since I didn't like the original. But it looked great and it was fun seeing all the places they filmed in Chicago.

Special When Lit: A Pinball Documentrary -> Really gotten in to video pinball with Pinball Aracde so was looking forward to watching this but it wasn't that good. It mainly focused on a few people who were either socially awkward or obviouslly had some mental issues and basicaly painted a picture those were the people that play pinball.

Just watched Last of the Mohicans, its been a few years since I watched it last.  Fantastic movie all around, but the the final 15 minutes of the film is the best I've ever seen.

Yeah, I'm a really big fan of Pratchett's Discworld novels, but the movies they have made based on them can't even keep me interested.  You're definitely much better off just reading some of the books than watching those made-for-TV things, so don't let it color your opinion in general.

Thankskilling is the absolute worst movie I've ever seen. I'm not kidding. Its only saving grace is that it's only a little over an hour long. Still, it's an hour I wish I had back.

The Inbetweeners are up.  At least two seasons of the show are.  BBC sitcom about teenagers.  I was surprised at how much I've laughed at the series.

I always thought Daniel Day-Lewis would've been an awesome "thinking man's" action movie star after seeing this, but he just wasn't interested in that type of thing (probably to his credit). He always seems to do great work in anything he's in.
