By the way, I don't know if I ever recommended LOUDquietLOUD, the Pixies reunion documentary. If you like the Pixies you'll definitely enjoy it, and it's just an interesting movie even if you don't know much about them. It's really a real life story of a band who was really happy to do a reunion for financial reasons and were legitimately surprised by how popular they were. Then there's some good drama as well.
I also watched the Minuteman doc "We Jam Econo", which is pretty educational if you are into that stuff. I watched "Kill Yr Idols", which is about the early 80s no-wave movement, but it honestly wasn't all that good.

I saw the following synopsis of a film in a list of movies that netflix suggested to me after I watched a couple of foreign horror films recently: "New York Ripper" is considered to be Lucio Fulci's most extreme exercise in cruelty. A killer who quacks like a duck stalks the streets of New York City on a rampage of violence and depravity, killing women in ghastly ways and without remorse, all while Lieutenant Fred Williams (Jack Hedley) is on his trail. and immediately I put it in my queue. good lord, how could i not? The Aflac duck as a serial killer? it's like they read my mind.

A couple I would recommend.
The Secret of Kells (Unique animation and well made) Monsters (Cloverfield except character driven and without the shakycam) Hogfather (Terry Pratchett movie, great for fans OK for everyone else) The Pillars of the Earth (Miniseries political epic focused on the church in 12th century England)

It is still up. Still worth a look but I thought Color of Magic was far inferior of the two. Color of Magic being a lot more fanciful showed the limits of their budget a lot more and I didn't care for the direction they took with many of the characters.

Wasn't sure if I should put this in the US Top Gear thread or here, but figured this was fine. I just saw that Netflix has all of the British Top Gear from Series 2 through Series 15 in Instant Watch now. A few were available previously (9 and 10 at least), but most of them are newly available.

Watched Micmac last night. Jeunet is just a genius filmmaker. His movies can be both artistic AND incredibly entertaining at the same time. Keeping with the French motif, I then watched a film called Sheitan. I did so because I saw that one of the stars was Vincent Cassel and I had recently seen him in the great Public Enemy films from France. I cannot recommend Sheitan to anyone, but I couldn't stop watching it. Once I realized it's actually SUPPOSED to be part comedy, it became somewhat more enjoyable. But around the 45 minute mark, I thought I had accidentally taken acid. It's just an odd, odd film.

That means I'm out on watching this - tried to watch Hogfather, but some of the characters were too annoying. If the characters are even inferior in the Color of Magic, there's no way I'll get through it. I haven't read any of Pratchard's Discworld novels, so I figure I better just avoid viewing these and get the books.

They are made-for-TV movies, so they are not exactly blockbuster quality. The books, however, are tons of fun.

Pratchetts discworld books are an aquired taste if you have difficulty with people doing very stupid things, because that is definitely going to happen in Discworld.

I did a search and didnt see it mentioned, but Seasons 1, 2, 3 & 4 of The Guild are available on Instant Watch. Each Season is about a hour and half. Premise is about a girl addicted to a MMORPG and her guild try to deal with real life and the game. Felicia Day wrote and stars in it as Codex (in game toons name). Apparently she was a ex RPG addict. Checking the internet they got signed to due a 5th season. GF didnt want to watch but watched 1 and 2 with me two nights ago. While at work last night I asked how her day was going, she said our daughter was sleeping and she was watching The Guild.

I'm wondering what peoples thoughts are on the Highlander TV series. I really enjoyed the original 86 movie and didn't like the sequels at all with the exception of Endgame which was OK. I watched a few episodes of the 92 and 93 season when it originally aired, but I was very limited for viewing time back then and in 94 along came the X-Files. One thing that's fun about watching it (same for the X-files) is that I can recognize the location for at least every other scene and it makes me reminisce about moments I spent in that part of the city. I watched the 1st 3 episodes of season 1 and it was OK, albeit quite cheesy. I'm thinking it needs to improve some if I'm going to get through all 6 seasons. I've read that jumping in at season 4 isn't a bad idea, because many feel season 4-6 were really the best and you can successfully bypass the plotline in season 1-3. Anyhow, I'm looking for feedback from people here who've viewed the whole series.

I watched it as much as possible back then, but as I had no desire to master that "VCR" technology and the syndicated nature of the show, I wasn't able to follow a lot of the overarching story lines. It's on my list of stuff to go back for. You know, after I finish Farscape, Babylon 5, Band of Brothers, Nowhere Man...

A pair of French quasi-zombie movies. Mutants - Just an okay movie. Pretty predictable but has some decent gore. The Horde - Very gory zombie movie set in an apartment high rise. Didn't care for the ending much - again, predicable. What I did like was the diverse cast of characters. And the gore.

Cool. I'm actually watching it right now. I'm reading my way through the complete "canon" of Holmes stories currently and I really enjoyed the recent Guy Ritchie film. This one seems like an interesting modern take on the characters (Holmes and Watson).

Has anyone else watched Moby Dick:2010? My son talked me into it and I'm not sure if its the worst movie I've ever seen, but I'm thinking it might be. I figure its always a bad sign for a non-comedy movie, when the cast and the script dialog don't take any of it seriously. You just know while watching this that there were many a cut due to fits of laugher or "Are you f'ing serious you want me to say that?". The CGI is priceless - think the worst Japanese monster movies of the 70's. A real gem if you're part of that minority that actually enjoys terribly, terrible movies.

I streamed a horror movie last night that I can't believe I missed back in 2002 - Dog Soldiers. Its plot isn't much different than a number of horror films, but the overall production made up for any story shortcomings. It wasn't the hightest budget film and it shows in some of the effects, makeup and gore, but what they did with what they had is impressive. The premise is interesting and the military mood and setting reminded me so much of a P'n'P RPG (Weird Wars-Tour of Darkness) my son and I play, that it smacked me in the face with a pure fanboiz rush. There's also some good performances by 2 of the male leads. Good job by Sean Pertwee who's a decent actor but hasn't landed really big rolls, but many here might recognize his voice acting from Medieval Total War, Killzone or Fable II. As well, there's Kevin McKidd who's done some decent TV and movie roles and also voice acted in GTA Vice City and Modern Warfare 2. For fans of Survival Horrors like Resident Evil or Aliens, IMO this is really a must see film. I've since looked it up on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes and noted that its ranked 68% and 76% respectively. Not too shabby at all.

Some ridiculously good films have made their way to Netflix streaming, or are on their way shortly. Available now is the fantastic Korean film I Saw the Devil. A cop's wife is killed by a serial killer. The cop finds the serial killer...and then begins a long process of catch, torture and release. incredibly entertaining. Stars the lead actor from Oldboy to boot. Starting tomorrow, you can watch another great Korean film called The Man from Nowhere. A nameless loner living quietly in the slums makes friends with a little homeless girl. When a gang of thugs kidnaps her, we find out the nameless guy is really, really, really good at killing people who piss him off. Not going to ruin it, but there's a knife fight in this film that will have you wincing and pumping your fist at the same time. Friday, you can catch A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop . A retelling of the Coen Bros' Blood Simple set in 18th (or around abouts) century China. It's slower than the two previous films, but really fun nonetheless.

Also just a reminder that Harry Brown (Michael Caine) and Black Death (Sean Bean) are up on instant netflix.

I Saw the Devil! Once again, Korea shows us how to do a badass thriller the right way. Or is it a horror movie? Or is it torture porn? Whatever you call it, this movie is wonderful. I might have to watch the revenge trilogy again this weekend.

The League Season 1 was just added. Probably my favorite comedy on TV right now. Unfortunately the first season is just six episodes, but it's great.
Thanks for the heads-up on this one. I'd never heard of The League before, but it was awesome. That doctor scene with Shiva (who is smokin' hot, btw) was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. Hoping they add season 2 sometime.

I watched Black Death last night. It was surprisingly decent. Nothing spectacular, but the story was well told, the acting was pretty good, and there were enough twists in the plot to keep my interest. It's also pretty damn violent (decapitations, torture, etc), so be warned.

And I watched Monsters tonight. I really liked it. Not knowing anything about the film going in, I thought it would be sort of a lower budget Cloverfield. That's not at all what it is, though; while the "monsters" set the background, they aren't the focus of the movie. And the movie looks great in HD.
