What's there to fear? If you slice into it, you see pork meat that looks the way you'd expect healthy and edible pork meat to look, right? What's not to like about that cross section? Those little chunky parts are flavor bursts!

Not to defend the McRib (I've never actually eaten one), but you can't expect ground meat to look the same as a slab of meat. Hamburger sure as hell doesn't look the same as a steak, and has plenty of "little chunky parts", but it can still be really yummy. What did you expect a plain fast food cooked pork patty to look like?

I expected steamed low-grade pork pressed into a pseudo rib-like shape to look exactly like that.

You know, this kinda makes me want some spam more than I want a mcrib? Gotta go digging back a few pages and find that recipe for a high quality faux mcrib. It's mostly the BBQ sauce and the onion anyway.
Hmm... maybe something like a spam musubi with BBQ sauce instead of the musubi suace and onion.

Would a man who kicked a bear pussy out at trying a McRib? I think not. Grab your junk, man up and get one already!
Finally had my McRib. It was pretty good. My fiance expressed shock (I've been eating healthier recently) but that didn't stop her from eating some too. Not sure I'd do it again anytime soon. Maybe it's more than a clever marketing ploy.

Since today was the last day of the promotion (I suspect some locations may have "leftover McRib" and continue offering it for a while), this seemed an amusing way to wind things down... McRib is gone. Seven variations you can make at home.http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/2011/1114/McRib-is-gone.-Seven-variations-you-can-make-at-home/Classic-McRibThe distinguishing feature of the McRib has to be its pork patty, which, miraculously (or creepily, depending on who you talk to) is boneless, yet shaped like a traditional rack of ribs. These culinary conundrums are manufactured by food wholesaler JTM Food Group, and called the 6’’ Boneless Pork Grillin’ Ribs.
According to the JTMwebsite, their products are available at most grocery retailers within a 300-mile radius of Cincinnati. If you don’t live within 300 miles of Cincinnati, Morningstar’s vegetarian “Hickory BBQ riblets” are an acceptable substitute. I like the capper on the McRib Double Down... This is one of those recipes that tastes even worse than it looks, according to our testers. As far as the breakfast goes, I don't recommend something with this much fat at the beginning of the day. It might be a better way to end your day.

Strolled to McDonald's for lunch, no spring in my step. When what do I see on the restaurant window? (took photo from inside later) I grin. And remember this thread. Temptation! Still too much sauce, imho (wish I could get it on the side) Still tastes good imho. Just, there was a hard tiny bit in mine (thankfully I extracted it before hurting a tooth). Maybe ground up human tissue or hog snout? I think maybe one slight change is using sort of "onion slivers" rather than diced onions. Or maybe it was always like that? I leave it up to the McRib experts here to get me up to speed on that.

Btw, if I decide I try one, should I eat it? Or just smell it, chew it , then split it out and place it directly in the toilet? I would be only cutting out the one step.

Disgusting, revolting, and I'm sure that its immoral in some degree or another. Actually, while it's horrifying in the fat department, McRib is quite modest (relatively speaking, compared to say, a Quarter Pounder) in calories (500) and sodium (980 - not good, but most fast food is crazy on the salt, even classier places like Panera). I wouldn't live on it, but you can enjoy it once in a while as a pork-like squiddish piece of goodness.

Agreed, man. I love it though, thanks Ceekay. I assumed McNuggets were the appetizer. The funny thing is, I had awesome Real baby back ribs for lunch Saturday, and it made me feel bad this morning. It's like my organs respond better to McDonalds and Wendy's I guess I need fast food detox....

Spoiler for Hiden: What's there to fear? If you slice into it, you see pork meat that looks the way you'd expect healthy and edible pork meat to look, right? What's not to like about that cross section? Those little chunky parts are flavor bursts! when you see it in a url (as in the pic at the top of this page. or in the spoiler tags) McRib is mcrib. I can't help but see the word "crib" in it.

Bleh, this just makes me want to find some fine pork to grill up, slather on the best BBQ sauce I can find, and chow it down with some tater tots.
Which I'm probably going to do tomorrow.

How did I not get assigned to do this article? Saw this mentioned on Blue's News, of all places... 11 Amazing Facts about the McDonald's McRibhttp://finance.yahoo.com/news/11-amazing-facts-about-the-mcdonald-s-mcrib-170212930.html*The article has more details, but here's the basic list. 1. The McRib came about because of a shortage of chickens. 2. The McRib was inspired by Southern BBQ. 3. The McRib is a product of "restructured meat technology." 4. The whole process from fresh pork to frozen McRib takes about 45 minutes. 5. The entire McRib sandwich contains about 70 ingredients — including a flour-bleaching agent used in yoga mats. (YUM!) 6. The McRib debuted in 1981, disappeared in 1985, and has resurfaced from time-to-time since 1994. 7. Individual restaurants can actually order the ingredients for the McRib at any time. 8. McDonald's keeps the McRib scarce because the sandwich's entire brand relies on it. 9. It'd be incredibly difficult for McDonald's to create more McRib-esque products, because that cult-like following is so hard to replicate. 10. There's also speculation that the McRib is really just a big commodity trade by McDonald's. 11. Animal rights group sues McRib meat supplier over inhumane treatment of pigs. These are my favorite passages: Although the McRib doesn't contain a single bone, [Chicken McNugget Inventor Rene] Arend suggested the meat be patterned after a slab of ribs instead of the classic round patty. ... According to an article from Chicago magazine, which cites a 1995 article by Mandigo, "restructured meat product" contains a mixture of tripe, heart, and scalded stomach, which is then mixed with salt and water to extract proteins from the muscle. The proteins bind all the pork trimmings together so that it can be re-molded into any specific shape — in this case, a fake slab of ribs. ... Director of McDonald's U.S. supply chain Rob Cannell explained how regular pig gets transformed into the famed McRib in an interview with Maxim: "The McRib is made in large processing plants—lots of stainless steel, a number of production lines, and these long cryogenic freezers. The pork meat is chopped up, then seasoned, then formed into that shape that looks like a rib back. Then we flash-freeze it. The whole process from fresh pork to frozen McRib takes about 45 minutes." Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... I still don't get why they don't just distribute the chopped up pork and then let the workers assemble sandwiches using a "pork grease gun" (kind of like the caulking-like dispensers they use at Taco Bell for taco ground beef) or something. That would look more like the shredded BBQ people get at restaurants, rather than looking like something from a squid-pig hybrid.
