I just noticed that iOS 5 no longer ties up your phone while syncing, I thought it not doing so during the update was something screwy but then noticed again tonight there was no lock screen when I accidentally connected it to my PC while talking on the phone.

Hilarious!

Pretty impressed with Siri for the little that I've asked of her so far.  I don't use my phone for much personal organization and don't keep my calendar in there, so it's a bit limited.

"Siri, set a reminder for Mom's birthday tomorrow."
Sets a reminder for tomorrow, 9am.
"Errr... 10am."
Changes it to 10am.   Pretty cool!

"Do I need an umbrella tomorrow?"  Saw this on the web somewhere and it does bring up the weather.

I have no cause to complain about battery life so far.  I turned off all push of any kind long ago and that helped a ton.
My battery life is okay and so far haven't driven it into the red. Siri is great for setting up reminders and other info. My absolute favorite thing to do is dictate a text meesage. thumbsup

4S owners, how is your battery life?  I have read somethings about it not being as good as quoted.

Mine has definitely been worse than with my 4. I am hoping it's something they will fix in software (bug or something) since they made a big deal about how it is supposed to get better battery life. I did turn Push for iCloud to Fetch and that helped some.

I don't see any setting for push or fetch for iCloud?  What settings are you adjusting?

Thanks man. I have had push off and fetch set to manually and I still see stuff. I wonder if it fetches when I open an app that uses iCloud?

you had to figure it was only a matter of time:  Siri hacked to run on other iProducts

don't get too excited though:

Nuts,  I don't know what on earth I did to my phone this weekend, but I seem to have caught the battery drain problem. I even tried restoring to factory settings and I still have it. It was working just fine...

What are your GPS and location service settings?

I've turned off the whole time zone thing that they recommend online. Thing is, from the time I got the phone until around Saturday it was working no differently than my 3GS, and that was with everything set to defaults. Then it started burning down 10% every 30 minutes or so (although it varies a bit).

Hmm if the issue is 10% every 30 mins even when not doing anything then I'm definitely not seeing that.  Sorry to hear Teggy.  You and power are just not getting along these days.

So I seem to have fixed my phone for the time being, at least. I took my phone off the charger at 6:30am and at 9:30am it was still at 100%. I only did 2 things:

1. Turned off the auto time zone feature, which I don't think actually did anything.
2. Set the phone to back up to the computer instead of the cloud.

The second thing definitely has me thinking, but I can only speculate. The reason being that my problems pretty much started when the power went out and I no longer had a wi-fi connection. At that point, I shut off wi-fi on my phone. What I am wondering is if the phone just continued to try and back up the phone non-stop, even with wi-fi off.  The phone was staying warm, as if it was trying to process something.

My wife's phone is also experiencing the problem so it lends some creedance to this theory. Unfortunately, she's off on a business trip so I won't be able to experiment on her phone for a few days.

If so that would be a pretty big bug. It's only supposed to back up to the cloud when plugged in, locked, and connected to wifi.

Well like I said, I can really only speculate. The phone did seem to have gotten itself into some odd state after the power outage. I even restored the phone to a backup from almost a month ago and it still heated up and drained battery. Definitely very strange.

Every time my phone starts draining oddly, I clear out everything in the memory and shut down location services.  That seems to get it back to normal draining.

I've also gone to a battery backup type of case (Boost Case or Phonesuit), which makes the phone chunkier and heavier but I don't have to worry about it as much.

I think I junixed myself because my phone is now going bonkers all of a sudden.  I got some weird message wanting Verification, don't know where or why it popped up but I'm wondering if something is pinging in the background somehow.

I don't know if clearing the memory is accurate, but just double tap home button and stuff you've used recently shows up.  Hold down any icon and then you can clear all those apps.

iOS 5.0.1 BETA is out, here's the change list:

Quote
• Fixes bugs affecting battery life
• Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
• Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
• Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
• Contains security improvements
• iOS 5.0.1 beta introduces a new way for developers to specify files that should remain on device, even in low storage situations."

Yay, for gestures on the OG iPad.

I have been enjoying my new iPhone 4S. For the first couple of weeks I had poor battery life but I could get through a day. However, since Monday it has been running hot all the time and the battery drains in about 6 hours. I've tried killing all apps, rebooting, powering off. Turning off wi-fi, location services, and it's still sucking up battery. This is so annoying!

I took it off my charger at 5:30 AM this morning. It's close to 9 and I have 43% battery life left. I haven't taken a call and it's only received a few emails. I know I am going to have to bite the bullet and reset the phone to factory.

Anyone else having similar problems?

Updating mine right now with the OTA update.  I'm in SoCal, so I'm not sure we fall under the US umbrella or not. icon_wink

You do need to be on wifi to receive it.  The delta patch is about 55mb for the 4s.

Just did my first OTA update, and it was absolutely painless. In less than 10 minutes, my phone was back up and running the new software. It's about time Apple did this.

The battery life is better but still not great. I'm guessing about 15 hours out of a charge now instead of 6 to 8.

I'd say the issue would be fixed if your battery life has doubled.  If I use my phone for an extended amount of time, I have to recharge it nightly.  I have a plain old 4.  I figure that's just the nature of the beast for mobile phones.

Well, I have upgraded and I can say that I still have the problem where the iPhone charges to 100% and while still connected to my laptop, will trickle down and so I can pull it off the charger and only be at 95%.  My old 4 never did that...I thought maybe it was a side effect of this battery problem.

Haven't tried the update yet but hoping for the best...

In the mean time, I've been using a battery/charge case.  The obvious con is the increase in size/weight.  The plus is you can essentially double your battery lifetime, or in my case my main phone battery pretty much never gets taxed now.

These are the two I've tried, they are extremely similar in design:

Boostcase - better overall feel and quality, but lacks a simple power switch and is slightly heavier even with the lower charge version
(1700mAh); they also offer a 2200mAh version which is presumably chunkier

Phonesuit - feels just a tad smaller/lighter, but also cheaper.  There's a switch but it kind of pokes on my pinky (no big deal, just noting the difference).  More juice though compared to the standard Boostcase - 2100mAh

I'm using the latter more now, the extra power plus slight difference in size makes up for the cheaper quality feel.

Batter life does seem a little better now, but I need to give it a few days more to see how it goes.

On a side note, Siri keeps activating whenever I try to listen to my voicemail on the handset.  I'm not pushing the button, so I don't know why it keeps popping up.  I'm now forced to listen to my voicemails through my speaker phone.  Anyone else have this problem?

Also, does anyone know if there is an app like Blackberry Mobile conferencing which scans your appointments and will call the dial-in number and conference code?
