I just ran out and picked it up,i still don't know why there is not a normal Blu Ray Extended Version, having to buy the 3D Blu Ray version is dumb..so yeah Discs 1 and 2 are the extended 3D version and disc 3 is the Extended 2D Blu Ray version..and Disc 4 and 5 are Appendices 7 and 8(not sure what i have missed there, are they including LOTR appendices and that's why we are at 7 and 8 already?)

Hopefully i can get around to watching it this weekend

ps-it could have done with an insert showing the special features 'tree' like LOTR DVDs did

I enjoyed The Hobbit but wasnt blown away by it.  It was about what I expected.  I figured with the added storylines that jackson has filled out, that the first movie would be mostly set up.  From the trailers, Desolation is looking like it will be a stronger movie.  Im looking forward to this one.
definitely more looking forward to the third with the huge fight.

Watched The Hobbit Extended last night, picture looked great and sound was also great(some BR's get that distortion but Hobbit was perfect)

The Added scenes were mainly fun
Spoiler for Hiden:
bath time for the Dwarves and food fight at Rivendell, and Kili pointing out a 'Elf Maiden',only for the elf to turn around and it be a dude

I am pretty sure i saw Sean Astin in the extended Hobbiton scenes, but i also watched the film with the Directors commentary afterwards and they made no mention

The Directors commentary was interesting, them pointing out stuff that was CGI which i had no idea

They also mentioned a small spoiler for the next two films here and there
for example
Spoiler for Hiden:
The Sackville-Baggins will make an appearance, probably in the third film when Bilbo arrives back home

There are also added scenes for The White Council and them talking about the Dwarf Rings with one being unaccounted for,PJ says he put this back in as it will come into play for the second and third films

Peter Jackson also answered people's concerns that the movie started too slow(it was fine for me),he also said that Hobbit 2 would be much faster into the action and wouldn't really let up

Philippa Boyens asked him if he was ever going to replace the Ian Holm finding the ring scene from LOTR with the Martin Freeman scene from The Hobbit,he said he was unsure, but if he did ever do that he would not want the original to be unavailable

The New Zealand Earthquake happens a few minutes into the Commentary

Just got back. It is a little long to be sitting in a theater, but I enjoyed it. Better than the first one (which I really liked), but it could have done without the elf/dwarf love thing. They really did not need to create that character.

Smaug is amazing, incredibly cool looking, everything about him was very well done. He made the movie for me. I got the impression a lot of people were getting a bit bored until Smaug's part started, general shuffling of the crowd, but as soon as we saw him the whole theater was motionless and quiet. Can't wait for the next one just to see him do his thing.

Saw it at Alderwood at 630 and it wasn't even close to sold out. Just go early enough and you should be fine.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Thought they would have killed Smaug in this movie, so they could deal with The Battle of the Five Armies in the final third.  That's alot of stuff to deal with in the last movie

Just got back and enjoyed it,loved the Dragon and Laketown, but i think overall i enjoyed the first movie more

The Dol Goldur scenes were annoying,as it was just drip feeding you until the third movie with
Spoiler for Hiden:
The White Council battle

about 75% of the movie is in darkness,so if you plan on watching a bootleg on the web, you'll be disappointed  finger Tongue

The movie seemed to me to be about 90 minutes long, but it was 2hrs 40 minutes(including Credits),it flew by

I have to agree with SC's spoiler

I was Disappointed in
Spoiler for Hiden:
Beorn the Skinchanger,i swear he was in the movie for all of 5 minutes,PJ has promised he will have more scenes in the extended version, but just seemed a waste of time in the theatrical version

I saw it in 2D,like the first film

Yeah, I liked this one better than the first.  They seemed to have fixed a lot of the pacing issues that plagued An Unexpected Journey, and Cumberbatch as Smaug was incredible.

Not really. He always cameos (or has the lead role in the case of Bad Taste) in his movies, with no exceptions that I'm aware of. Fans of his movies tend to play the "spot Peter Jackson" game when watching them.

Yeah what TiLT said

I am pretty sure he features twice in The Two Towers, one guy defending Helms Deep by throwing a Spear and another as a Dunland Man(when Christopher Lee is feeding them bullshit so that they will fight for him)

and of course he has cameo's in other movies as well icon_wink

Okay,The Hobbit 1 extended

Watched the film
Watched the film with Directors Commentary
Watched the 9+hrs of Special Features

I want more!!!!(have to wait until Hobbit 2 extended icon_frown)

I loved the piece on Martin Freeman on the second disc of the special features in that there is a part where he sticks his middle finger to the camera in all sorts of scenes he is filming in the trilogy,at first it was a smile type thing for me,but by the end i was laughing, maybe because I always saw Martin Freeman as more an uptight sort of person, guess not icon_lol

Thankfully someone has uploaded it to YT,check it out,its only on for a minute

Watched 'Desolation Of Smaug' last night.. and I liked it! After not being enthused about 'Unexpected Journey', I was a bit suspect on the next movie.. but I thought 'Smaugh' was entertaining and compelling. Yeah, it's embellished, but I wasn't put off by it. The action sequences were fun and the new characters (Tauriel, in particular) were compelling. Bilbo meeting Smaug made it all worthwhile. Now.. the one year wait until we see the rumble over Lakethon.

It was good, of course, but the best part for me was the scenery in the HFR 3D version. It was stunning.

Spoiler for Hiden:
So for the cons...

The biggest disappointment by far was the Mirkwood sequence. Where was it?? My greatest hope for this film was that I would finally get to see some good dialog between the company while they were trapped in Mirkwood. Instead I got what seemed like five minutes of them walking in the forest with intermittent banter before an all too brief battle with the spiders, leading immediately to them being captured by the elves. Absolutely unbelievable! What a wasted opportunity for character development. My favorite parts of the first film were the dialog sequences for Balin and Bofur. Here you didn't even get that much. These are great actors and they've proven they can play these characters well. There's no reason for them to be cut out just so we can see another ten minutes of shit getting killed real good.

Some of the platforming sequences during the barrel ride bordered on surfing-on-an-oliphaunts-tusk ridiculous. Particularly Legolas jumping from dwarf to dwarf and Bombur's barrel rolling over dozens of orcs and flying all over the place. Just stupid.

The new character was perfectly fine but I could have done without the love triangle. The story could have easily stood on its own, and indeed would have been better and more substantial, if it were just Tauriel and Legolas / Thranduil butting heads over whether or not the elves should get involved in the conflicts outside their realm.

Beorn was done well, but it would have been nice if he had gotten a little more screen time.

The entire sequence with Smaug vs the dwarves was obviously tacked on because they needed something exciting to happen during the climax of this movie so people didn't walk out feeling completely ripped off when it ended before the attack on Laketown.

Why does Thorin regress to thinking Bilbo is a worthless toad immediately after the lovey-dovey sequence towards the end of the first movie?

For the pros...

The scenery was beautiful as usual.

The casting was exceptional. Everybody did a really fantastic job. I actually thought this was the best Orlando Bloom has played his character yet. Maybe it's because Legolas is more of a dick at this point in his life and is just that much more likable (by me, anyway) as a result.

Smaug. Brilliantly designed, rendered, voiced, and acted. His sounds and fire effects are absolutely awesome as well.

I saw it in 2D and if it was a higher frame rate I certainly didn't notice (I don't think it was). Overall I think it was a good movie and better than the first. 6 out of 8 tentacles.

Addressing ones of heloder's complaints:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Why does Thorin regress to thinking Bilbo is a worthless toad immediately after the lovey-dovey sequence towards the end of the first movie?

Spoiler for Hiden:
I can answer this one - he was being corrupted by the treasure horde and dwarven greed. It's pointed out several times that the mountain treasure corrupts. Balin even berates Thorin for acting like a dick to Bilbo and explains all that. Point being - dwarves turn into greedy racist fucks when they get near treasure, as the elves well know.  icon_biggrin

I just got back from seeing Desolation of Smaug and it completely blew me away. Yes there are some silly sequences and they took some grand liberties with characters/plot, but as a pure fantasy film it was really entertaining. Smaug is the best dragon ever put to film, hands down. Period.

I agree with both of you - Smaug is very well done and definitely one of the best beasts I've ever seen in a film. Actually, IMO all the production values are top rate for this. I agree with YellowKing's interpretation about the character's behavior discussed in heloder's spoiler. I thought his behavior was quite clearly explained by events and dialog in the film. My kids and I really enjoyed the female elf protagonist Tauriel  (think I spelled that correctly) that they added to the story. I'm not sure if she was an actual character in the Silmarilion or any of Tolkien's other works, but she was a nice inclusion.

Very enjoyable movie, and if the quality continues to improve, as it did with this and Jackson's films in the LotR trilogy, I can't wait for the final movie.

I agree with these assestments. Smaug doesn't dissapoint. Best dragon on film ever.

I would argue that there is one movie dragon just as good or better- Vermithrax Pejorative:

Smaug was good, the movie met all technical merits, but it really failed to excite me.

I started noticing things like how the same set of six stairs appears in all locations, and that in Middle Earth, they've never invented handrails.

Also

Spoiler for Hiden:
The whole "dwarves inside the mountain" running around and riding chains up and down? That killed the entire Smaug scenes for me.

Also Bilbo earned everyones respect by saving them from the spiders and the elves, and yet we fail to see much of that.
