Ah, the spiders. That was the most memorable scene from the books for me when I was a kid.

hopefully they're creepy and not goofy, like the Goblin King.

After the first one I am just not ready to rush out and see this.  Jackson drup in too much stuff for me and is trying to make it too  big for what the story really is.

I figure I'll try to at least catch this one at the theater, but if not then definitely the third one.

Same here. While I still enjoy seeing the sets, and outdoor shots of New Zealand they put in I just never got into the movie. It just sort of plodded along. Scenes like the council meeting in Rivendale felt like forced fan service to show past characters and some of the action stuff like the chase at the end felt way too long. No reason this thing should have been dragged out to 3 movies IMO but I guess the money is too much of a lure.

The Hobbit Trilogy costs exceed $500million

Quote
With more work still to go, Hobbit trilogy costs have almost doubled that of the entire Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, reports suggest...

The Hobbit trilogy is still shooting, with The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug gearing up for release on the 13th December, and The Hobbit: There And Back Again set for release in 2014. With plenty of work still ahead on the combined production, it's being reported that costs have already exceeded the half billion mark, with the current total at $561m.

That figure is almost double the entire combined budget for the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, and covers 266 days of filming, two years of post-production, two months of additional shoots, and the higher effects budget. Another factor that would play into the increased budgets, aside from increased fees for those involved and inflation, is the decision to shoot in both 48 frames per second as well as 3D.

This isn't the kind of production where you would have thought studio heads would be worried that costs are spiralling out of control. The immense popularity of The Lord Of The Rings trilogy has earned Jackson some freedom, as well as ensuring a sizeable built-in fan base which has helped The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey to take in excess of $1 billion at the global box office.

It's fair to guess that the other two instalments will take a similar amount, and when you factor in home video sales, which will inevitably see various releases over the coming years, Warner will ultimately make a very impressive profit. So even if the costs are considerably higher than the LOTR trilogy, this is still very much a sound investment for the studio.

And you still have Blu Ray/DVD sales for The Hobbit 1 on top of that Billion..with the extended cut DVD/BR not out yet

I would have been surprised if it was less.  Thats under $200 million per movie.  For productions at this level, thats not over the top at all.

Back when the LOTR films came out I never thought the day would come where I just don't care about an Extended Edition of one of these movies, but The Hobbit was so bloated already I can't imagine anything worthwhile being added to it.

Legolas is the son of the elven king in the Hobbit, so it makes a lot of sense for him to appear in this part of the story together with the elves. In particular, I suspect his part has more to do with the Dol Guldur-part of the story which the book doesn't do more than pay lip service to. I suspect this will be the film where the two storylines diverge, and Gandalf will need companions for his trip.

Extra 15 minutes(or whatever it is) i don't think will make that much difference if you think that,i myself am looking forward to the extended scenes of their time at Rivendell and Bilbo seeing the Shards of Narsil, and of course more Riddles in the Dark(as it certainly was longer in the book)

I know Blu-rays and DVDs are limited in this regard, but I wish they'd release this movie digitally somehow so that I could see it in 48hz again. It's just not the same watching it in 24hz.

I don't think the movie has been released in 48hz anywhere, so an iTunes release makes little difference. Not that I would use iTunes in the first place. Tongue

so,for some reason my mind made me completely forget that The Hobbit Extended Edition is out

Did anybody pick it up?

Think i will see if i can find it in the shops today or at least this weekend and get me ready for The Hobbit 2

from what i can tell by the first review,it says the 2D version of the extended film is one one BR disc,so that's good(the 3D version is on 2 BR discs)

EDIT:
I left this post, unposted while i read the Amazon page so when i did finally post and it said Ceekay had posted i thought  saywhat  Head meets wall

We watched the Extended Edition a week or so ago.  Definitely feels padded.  More so than other Extended Editions.  The pacing is just off, IMO, until it starts ramping up at the end.

There were a couple of moments I didn't remember from the theatrical release (mostly at Bilbo's house and then again at Rivendell), but I doubt I could tell you everything that had been added.

Still liked the movie, though.

I'm going to be checking out this one.. even though I didn't love 'An Unexpected Journey'. I watched that one on BluRay, and it took me three sittings to get thru it. Just too long. But.. I'm kinda excited for 'Smaug'.. so gonna go with the flow.

I enjoyed The Hobbit but wasnt blown away by it.  It was about what I expected.  I figured with the added storylines that jackson has filled out, that the first movie would be mostly set up.  From the trailers, Desolation is looking like it will be a stronger movie.  Im looking forward to this one.
