I finally got to see this last night with my kids. For me the high water mark for anything "The Hobbit", other than book, has been Rankin and Bass' 1977 animation feature that was animated by artists that went on to form the legendary Studio Ghibli. For me Jackson's movie equaled it, but didn't surpass it. Interesting enough, the animated movie is 1 hour and 17 minutes in length. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy the additional content in this new film, I did, but it didn't make it better than an earlier movie that gave the story a minimalist treatment. Both my kids enjoyed it though and I'd give it a thumbs up, especially for fans of Tolkien's Middle Earth.

Thinking of heading up to Huntsville, AL to catch the Hobbit at the Monaco. Any of the Locals tried that theater yet? Is it worth the trip from B-ham for the HFR?

My daughter and I saw this yesterday and I was absolutely blown away. I expected to hate the slow pace but really loved the entire movie. I can't wait to go see it again. There is a theater about half an hour from me that is showing it in 3D HFR.

saw this a few weeks ago and I came away with: "Meh. I'm glad I saw it" kinda feeling.
For me at least it seemed to lack the magic of the FoTR and the rest of the LoTR films. It felt similar to HBOs The Pacific in so far as trying to live up to what Band of Brothers was (and still is)
Anyhoo - like I said I am glad that I saw it and look forward to the other 2 installments.

How was the first 9 minutes of Star Trek into Darkness? I keep asking but nobody answers. I almost saw The Hobbit on New Year's Day, but caught Life of Pi (not playing in many theaters now) because I figured The Hobbit will be in theaters much longer. Maybe this weekend.

How was the first 9 minutes of Star Trek into Darkness? I keep asking but nobody answers. At the time, it did not really do much for me. While I enjoyed the last star trek movie, for some reason the charm of the characters seemed to have worn off on me somewhat. I saw the serial killer from American Horror Story (spock), the slightly odd-looking captain, and the guy that does a good voice impression of Bones. I did not get very pumped about seeing on it on the big screen based on what I saw even though some of the effects were not too bad.

Saw it with my wife and daughter on New Year's Eve, and we all really liked it a lot.
My wife had been hearing bad things, and she isn't a very patient movie-goer, so the fact that she liked it as much as she did says something. I was wary, too, and can be a bit of a movie snob if I'm looking for issues with a film. My daughter would probably have liked it either way.

How was the first 9 minutes of Star Trek into Darkness? I keep asking but nobody answers. When I went on Christmas day, the movie was delayed by 30 minutes while they tried to friggin' fix it. Most of the time I was looking at a Windows 7 desktop on the big screen When the movie finally DID start, they went straight into the main feature. I was rather pissed about this because of the delay AND the coming attractions I missed.

That's only the theatrical cut though...easy to get that one out quickly and make some money. They're holding off on the extended edition until sometime in the winter holiday season.

Extending that movie even more than the theatrical release will make it way too long. They will have to include even more stuff that never actually happens in the book. I mean what the heck will we see, Tom Bombadil fondling Goldberry?

I wonder if anyone is excited about this? I mean, its not like the time when we were all waiting for the next Lord of the rings, is it? The people I know at least, aren't really interested in it, and many talk about seeing it on the DVD when that arrives.

My kids are thrilled about the next movie, so that makes me happy about it too. In all fairness though, An Unexpected Journey was quality enough to get me back to the theater for a viewing of The Desolation of Smaug.

about the poster is that the secret side entrance??as i find it hard for a dragon to fit in if its the front entrance It's the main entrance, seen from quite a distance away. We saw it in the intro to the first movie. Smaug fits through that opening without any trouble.

I'll probably see it in the theater if t comes to the local cheap one, but other than that it's blu ray.

I thought the quality was decent but it felt like there were two styles that weren't meshing, mainly Jackson's mature setting and the design of many of the characters from the book.

Very Cool,The Infamous Barrel scene,LOL
doesn't Luke Evans look exactly like Orlando Bloom but from the 'POTC' Movies?
saying that good to see Legolas again, but Kate from Lost looked mighty strange,i think it was her auburn hair

Smaug looks properly huge. and yeah, Kate was odd as a redhead. took me a moment to recognize her.
as for Luke Evans, I thought Orlando Bloom was in Immortals because of the way he looks.
