It's at least good they're putting Smaug in the middle. I'd hate to have to wait for the last movie to see him in action.
They have had to cut corners though,so they have just put in the dragon from Shrek in it's place

I've just started re-reading the Hobbit, and I don't see how this is going to be a trilogy. Maybe 2 movies, but three!?

Having read the hobbit and the silmarillion and lord of the rings more times than I can count on both hands, I am giddy with excitement for the hobbit being released.

That trailer sure seems to strike home that this is going to be much more of a family movie than The Lord of the Rings. I wonder how those who aren't familiar with the books, only coming into the series with the movies, will react to that.

Yeah, I'm afraid they may have gone too far towards the cutesy, bumbling, family-friendly character aspect. Also, most of those dwarves don't look like dwarves at all.

This is what struck me about the trailer. They seem rather un...girthy to be dwarves.

I just thought that looked fantastic. The dwarves are young and good looking... that's what's weird. It's also the title of a really good album.

Yeah, I always pictured Thorin in particular to be old with white hair at least. Seems I remember that he was dreaming of trying to take back the mountain after his dad Thrain had died long ago.
I thought the book described him as old but it's been forever since I've read it. It was Fili and Kili that were described as much younger than everyone else I thought.

This is the picture Leo put up Ah. Much better. Everyone seems to look particularly dwarvish as one might anticipate. Except for Thorin. His head is too...human? Also the last guy on the far right. But I'm sure Jackson will do the content justice. Should be a fine time.

I had never read any of the books until just finishing The Hobbit recently. Tolkien has such a pleasant way of writing. It's hard for me to articulate exactly what I mean, but it's like he has an immense amount of respect for how he narrates or talks to the reader. I'm just sorry I didn't read any of his books sooner.
I was a little surprised to learn about his thoughts on the character of the dwarves. I always had this modern fantasy notion that they were stout warriors, very tough, loyal, loved fighting and drinking, and also loved their loot. In the Hobbit he describes them as being very selfish, not valiant at all unless there's something it in for them, and even then it's just not in their DNA to be heroes. They are greedy to a fault, and while there are good, honorable dwarves, there are many who are not. Many of the characters in the book state to Bilbo that he needs to be wary of agreements with dwarves, because they are well known to doublecross people. It wasn't until the very end during the battle of the 5 armies that the dwarves fit more of what I've thought of them.
It seems like Tolkien didn't have a very high opinion of his version of dwarves when he wrote The Hobbit.

If you read the Silmarillion you'll understand why the dwarves are the way they are.
From their creation to their dealings with elves during the time of melkor, much of their existence has been a struggle. They're a tough people because of it.

Well, just because they're dwarves doesn't mean they should all look alike, which seems to be what happens when most fantasy artists try to depict the race. In this case I believe they're exaggerating each dwarf's features to make them easier to tell apart. They're asking the audience to keep track of 13 dwarves after all, when many probably struggled even memorizing the 9 members of the Fellowship of the Ring (which consisted of all the major races, making them easier to tell apart).
