The bad news is that my car is probably fuxxored.

So I wake up this morning to lawns nicely blanketed in snow. Very pretty and picturesque. The roads look good though, and I head to work as is my duty. (And would be my duty even if the roads were iced over, but I digress.) I call my wife to let her know how things look outside and to be careful on overpasses, hang up and continue on my merry way.

I'm on the tollway less than a minute before I hit my first overpass. An overpass that apparently has an ice patch in my lane. An overpass where my car suddenly fishtails, pushing me left into the middle lane of traffic. I instinctively take my foot off the accelerator and turn into the swerve to try and regain control, but overcompensate. Fishtail the other way. There's a concrete barrier dead ahead and I'm not slowing down. BANG! The front end of my car slams into the barrier, still spinning. I come to rest mostly in the middle lane with several stopped headlights shining at me. My engine is making funny noises, but I push the accelarator to at least get into the far right lane (no medians on Dallas North Tollway). I cut the engine and step out.

DAMN. My bumper and grill are hanging by threads. The front driver side looks to have taken the brunt of the damage with a wheel well that's all kinds of misshppen and tire flatter than Kiera Knightley. That's when I realize the air bag never deployed. retard WTF? I get pissed.

A wrecker, on his way to another wreck further south, pulls over. Hitches up the rear of my car to get me off the tollway. We start to pull off and my car doesn't want to cooperate. Seems that flattened tire is pulling my car over into the concrete barrier as we move. So I end up in my car, fighting the steering wheel something fierce as I get pulled backwards through the toll plaza with headlights in my face. I've never been through a toll plaza backwards. That's kinda neat!

Right now I sit at home, a little sore and with a scraped knee, but doing fine. Just waiting to find out how bad the damage is and how long it'll take before I get my car back. If I get my car back. The front end was pretty screwy. I hope to get pictures this afternoon and share 'em!  icon_biggrin

[EDIT] And share I shall! See this post.

I had an accident not too long ago and was also aggravated by the airbag not deploying. It was a 2000 Ford Escort Sedan so it was just over 6 years old. Thinking back, walking away with little more than a bruised knee and wounded pride, the contact wasn't THAT bad. The front end crumpled a bit and the radiator wouldn't be radiating any more, but the impact was not severe enough to trigger the airbag.

It felt bad, but the impact was prolly only 20ish miles per hour into the passenger door of an Isuzu pick up. It's probably good the airbag didn't fire as I might have been seriously hurt. Good thing I had the seat belt on.

Glad to hear you're crayola smoking days are not over.

I'm really glad that you didn't get hurt in that accident!  Ice is teh suck.  I don't much about it since I am from Louisiana, but that is what I have heard.

It sounds as if you handled that situation pretty good.  I bet most people will make the over steer mistake, but I am pretty sure most people are not smart enough to take their foot off the gas and/or the brake and try and steer out of a situation like that.

That is some excellent driving under pressure in my opinion!

Several years ago my wife was driving me to work on a Sunday morning.  We were passing a sugar cane truck (fully loaded) in the right lane when he decided to switch lanes and did not see us.  He clipped us on the drivers side passenger door, spun us in a complete 360 and subsequently smacked us again broadside on the drivers side.  We were then pushed about 200 or so feet sideways by the semi.  My wife was a good enough driver to not try and break, accelerate, or steer.  I am pretty sure that if she would have tried any of those things that it would have resulted in us flipping several times.  We walked away from that accident because my wife handled it so well in my opinion.  We are talking a 60MPH accident with a fully loaded semi and a Mitsubishi Galant that involved two separate impacts!

Good driving under extreme pressure - just like what you did.  smile

Damn, glad you're OK.  We had a pretty nasty snowstorm here earlier this week that turned a 20 minute commute into an hour and a half.  Always an adventure during winter driving!

Good to hear you got out of it OK. Cars can be repaired/replaced!

We had a woman two days ago here in KC spin out on I-29, hitting the median. She gets out of the car and decides to cross the highway...and got hit by oncoming traffic and died  retard

Yikes, sorry to hear that.  Very sucky.  Glad to hear you're ok... even if your car isn't.  It's tough losing a cherished car (I had to have my car impounded when someone rear-ended me on the highway in Reno) and I've missed that car.

If your airbags didn't go off and you didn't hit your head, then everything is probably fine.  They will give you a nasty smack when they do go off.  I had virtually the same accident when I was 17 - ice on an overpass slid me into a car in front of me, then someone behind me slid into me.  Glad to hear you're ok!

Sure enough. My wreck happened southbound on Dallas North Tollway at the Haverwood overpass. The radio chatter in the wrecker was incredible. Many drivers passing new wrecks on the way to the ones they were assigned. After a flurry of new reports one of the drivers retorted, "Dispatch. You better call and wake up some more trucks."

Got a call from the insurance company - the body shop thinks the car's a total loss. It'll likely be Monday before insurance gets their adjuster out to look at the car and we know something concrete. I'm gonna call the body shop and see if I can come get a couple things we left in the car (handicap tag, phone charger, etc) and take some pictures this afternoon. Looks like I might be getting a new car sooner than I thought! eek

For anyone in the know - how does the "total loss" thing work? Do they give me the fair market value for the vehicle just prior to the accident?

CS, glad to see your wax addiction and lax derision (and perhaps tax evasion?) weren't impaired by your poor driving skills.  slywink

context: I live in Winnipeg. Half the year I'm on ice, snow, sleet etc.... I kick ass at driving the ice tracks on RalliSport series games for that same reason... never oversteer on ice. biggrin There's no way I'm going to be doling out sympathy for a Texan with an iddie bitty widdow bit of ice. (I'm just kidding of course, I'm relieved to hear you're ok).

Oh, and I've added you to the Wii list; it would suck if I had to update that AGAIN.

crayola im pretty sure youll get the dealer listed blue book value (whatever is used to assess your car taxes / registration fees) - which is good because dealers basically write those books and inflate a bit smile

a lot of it could depend on your insurance, however, and what THEY have the cars listed value as - also your (if?) deductible may come off that value

- oh and geez almost forgot - glad youre okay (man with that cold callous attitude I myself may have a career in insurance smile)

Doesn't look so bad from back here...

Tried to see what the engine looked like, but couldn't get the hood to open. I'm a neanderthal when it comes to car mechanics, but my keen senses tell me, "Too much bent stuff jam latchy-thing."

Felt kinda odd walkin' away from the ol' jeep knowin' I'll likely never see her again. It's the first car I've ever bought and paid for. I'm saddened.

they said THAT was totalled???  im surprised a first glance from pictures on the internet (i know, i know) and it looks like its all cosmetic.  assuming that its leaning because the tire is blown, and id also guess that the front end stuff is fine as well

honestly, it doesnt even look like you "accordioned" (hehehe - i used accordion as a verb) any of the body structure either - the area where your front right headlight should be isnt even dented

Well, the driver's side is accordioned back a bit. If you look at the remaining headlight from multiple pictures you can kinda tell how far back and to the center it got pushed. This pic might also help:

And don't forget, the rear was damaged, too!  icon_wink

My guess is that there's significant engine work that would need to be done and that pushes it right at, or past, the "value" of the car. It's a 2002 with just shy of 70,000 miles on it. Blue book shows "excellent" condition ones only sell for about $9,000. *shrug* We'll see what the adjuster has to say about it.

I'm not suprised.  I hit a large rock that caused minor damage to the underside of my car (minor suspension damage, dented floorboard) and it was nearly totaled.  That's on a 2002 Saturn with 58,000 miles worth about $5k.  It's not about the cost of the parts, it's the cost of that labor hours and bodyshops charge a huge hourly rate.  About 65% of the cost of my repair was labor.

Wow!  Looks like the concrete barrier won that round!  How fast were you going?  The damage looks pretty bad in my opinion.  I wonder if the frame is bent or anything, you mentioned they were thinking about listing it as a total loss right?

Heh btw the driving stuff - I have not driven in years myself but I still remember how to, so while it's sort of funny hearing driving compliments from a non-driver I guess.  I still kind of know about driving at least!  smile  Oh yeah, I always drove a standard too!  smile

Well, when my car was stolen, they gave it about 2 weeks to make sure it didn't show up somewhere.  But then I was prompty issued a check for the current Blue Book value of it.  Overall it was a very painless process.  I have State Farm for the record.  Good luck!

I had my car totaled in an accident a couple years ago. When State Farm quoted me for how much they'd give me for the wreck, I searched online for the price of cars of the same make/model and similar mileage. When I called State Farm and said that they were offering me too little money, they took a look at the same sites and actually added a few hundred dollars onto the total. So you might want to do a little homework now and figure out a fair price for your Jeep just in case your insurance company tries to low-ball you.
