God be with the firefighters.

Did you find out for sure if they work in there or not?  Are they ok?

This was all over the news last night and this morning. About 30+ hospitalized, the majority of which were fireman. No reports of fatalities yet. Fortunately, this happened at about 6:30 PM, so the building wasn't filled. After a similar high-rise fire killed six people last year, a lot of changes have been made in the way these things are handled, by building owners and the fire department. There is now a fire RAT team (rapid assault something ot other) created specifically to get everybody evacuated as quickly as posisble.

The video last night was pretty wild. You could watch the fire head east on the 29th floor, blowing out windows as it moved on.

Yea, the video was wild.

That building didn't have a sprinkler system on the upper floors yet.  That's crazy, I thought every large building these days had a sprinkler system.

I caught a live press conference when I tuned in after seeing this thread and the spokesman (I think it was for LaSalle Bank) was asked repeatedly about sprinklers and all he kept saying was, "the building was in the process of being fitted with sprinklers"

Reporter: "Are you saying there are NO sprinklers?"

Spokesman: "The building was in the process of being fitted with sprinklers"

I think the building did have a waterpump to provide emergency firefighting water to the upper floors.

Either way, that was some scarey video to watch.  I'm glad to hear of no fatalities so far.  Superb job by the fire department - I wouldn't want to try to fight a high-rise fire.

Unfortunately, six people needed to die last year in a fire that could have been contained with one sprinkler head in 15 minutes. All the old hi-rises in downtown Chicago have the same problem as this one.

Yeah, they ABC affiliate mentioned repeatedly that there is more than one ordinance being reveiwed to make sprinklers mandatory in Chicago since that Cook county fire last year (the one Grievous mentioned).

Funny that you guys are talking about this...I was at the W-City Center on Monday all night, and Tuesday.  Very surreal, especially when they closed off the streets.
