20 guesses as to how the iPad may look, lovingly coupled with wrong guesses on how the iPhone would look.

Based on how much those iPhone predictions undershot the mark, I'll predict that this new tablet will have a flexible OLED display. It will lock into the "big iPhone" position and look like the majority of the mockups we're seeing, but then you can bend it a third of the way up the screen and lock it into a pseudo-laptop shape. The top 2/3 will act as the monitor, and the bottom third will act primarily as keyboard but also adapt to other input functions.

Now for students, I'm not sure - normally you'd want the better text for less eyestrain, but for graphics/images/graphs/charts, etc you'd likely prefer the (presumably) higher resolution.  That will be an interesting arena to watch.

Here's an interesting demo addressing my comment above:

Yes, I see a flexible OLED screen that can tuck into my *bleep* for easy passage through security lines at airports and White House dinners.  icon_razz

I'm keen on hearing what it eventually turns out to be, but if they really think a $800-$1,000 tablet price point is going to work in the current economic environment, I want whatever Jobs is smoking.  smoke

While it wasn't the same economic environment (but was on the way there) when the iPhone was announced, I remember a lot of people making similar statements about the iPhone and it's initial price point. If I recall, that little thing seemed to sell pretty well? Especially when they got their production cheaper and lowered the MSRP.

I think Apple will be just fine here.

I think the reason so many people are so happy to pay so much for things Apple makes is precisely because Jobs shares liberally with what he's smoking.  I wouldn't be surprised to find out that the shells of Apple products are laced with a variety of LSD that makes them seem like they're hugely under-priced, and you should buy ten!

The appeal of Apple products is all in the design. I don't think there is another electronics company on the planet that focuses more on style than Apple.

I agree Apple products are over-priced. But in terms of blending cutting-edge style with a fantastic user experience, there's not many companies out there that can touch them. And I say that as former Apple despiser (while I still won't touch their computers, I do own an iPhone and have seen no other phone that has come close to rivaling it in terms of user experience).

So while I agree that the Apple cult phenomenon is at times inexplicable, I think there are concrete reasons for it that don't involve mind control or illegal drugs. Jobs puts the chic in geek.

It's not just the style though - otherwise clones which have copied (and maybe even improved upon) the style would likely be just as successful.  I think it's a combination of style and artistry, brilliant hardware engineering and innovation, and perhaps most importantly solid software (OS)/user interface development and testing.  The latter might be the most boring part in some ways, but ultimately the most important.  I've often bought products or used software where I wonder if a single "real" consumer was ever asked to test or use them, as there are numerous things that either don't make sense or just aren't the least bit intuitive.

As far as the comment on the Macbook Air, I don't have numbers or anything other than intuition to back this up, but my guess is it did not "fail" as seems to be the implication.  I've watched Dell, MSI and others 2 years later trying to create a competitor in the exact same class (thin, lightweight, 13", reasonably powered, etc), and still not being able to do it as well as Apple.  In other words these guys are still playing catch up and if it were that unsuccessful a concept, why would they bother.  I believe the MBA simply captured a small niche and comfortably stayed there - not to mention some of the hardware techniques and developments that were enablers for it were later carried over and refined to the general Macbook series.  So on that level, I would deem it an overall success, even if it heads to eventual discontinuation.

New rumors claiming the iSlate/Pad will be like the "iPhone on Steroids":

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/01/13/report-claims-tablet-is-iphone-on-steroids-runs-on-iphone-os-kernel/

This is interesting to me in that if true, it would likely mean cheaper hardware/software (relative to hardware capable of running full OS X) and possibly a cheaper opening price.  Can't wait for the formal announcement!

In the mean time, more interesting iTablet news, looks like gaming industry has been invited to the show - should be interesting for us gamers to see how gaming fits into Apple's plans given the success they've had on the iPhone and Touch.  Is World of Touchcraft coming soon?

The Apple Tablet: 'A First-Generation iPhone That's Met Its Match With a Rolling Pin'
http://gizmodo.com/5453903/the-apple-tablet-a-first+generation-iphone-thats-met-its-match-with-a-rolling-pin
Quote
According to AppleInsider's sources, this flickr image is the closest mockup of the Apple Tablet that anyone has seen to date. And yes, it's essentially a big, first-gen iPhone that's "met its match with a rolling pin."

Rather than a plastic back, AI claims the Tablet will have the same, two-tone aluminum look of the original iPhone. But while this image is thought to be very close to Apple's final design, it doesn't sound like a full-fledged OS X will be on board. Why? The Tablet will have an iPhone-inspired Home button (along with a 10-inch screen, 3.5-mm stereo headphone jack, built-in speaker grills, a microphone, GPS, 3G connectivity and a 30-pin dock connector, if AppleInsider has it right).
fwiw. I mean, for all we know, they're going to bring back the Apple IIe.  icon_razz

Sources also say that instead of using your fingers to manipulate things on the screen, you use your... tongue.  smirk

The more I read about it, the less skeptical I've become. If (and it's a big if) Apple can get the content publishers on board in the realm of textbook, magazines, games, etc. then I can see how this would be an extremely compelling device. As I've pointed out before I'm not a big fan of tablets, but an iPhone-esque user experience on a bigger screen coupled with the App Store and Apple's distribution power in terms of media content would be pretty intriguing.

I imagine it will be insanely overpriced, but I'm no longer in knee-jerk negativity mode.

Well they said that this event is going to target the mobile space, but the early expectations were that it would be the iPhone OS 4.0, not the hardware.  The rumors I've read say that even ATT is tired of the agreement because they're taking so much heat about their network and all because of the strain the iPhone itself puts on it.  Whatever the case, come to Verizon baby, they I don't have to switch carries slywink

I would switch to Verizon if they got rid of fucking CDMA. I do to much stuff overseas to have a phone that won't work over there.

I think that's a limitation of the network, so unless they move to their next gen thing (which won't happen for a couple years) then it's always gonna be like that.

Hate AT&T.  The coverage in VA is suck ass poor everywhere except for the Northern VA area.  I'm in the central to southwest areas and I have crap coverage almost everywhere.  Meanwhile Verizon is everywhere...if they weren't close to being the most expensive one out there they would probably rule most of the country.

I was with Verizon when they first announced the iPhone.  I bitched and moaned forever but finally gave in.  AT&T coverage in general I knew would be worse, but oddly enough in a couple of key spots it was actually much better than Verizon.  For instance my office is in a basement type area and got no Verizon signal.  But somehow I get a full 5 bars of AT&T.  Also whever I was at the beach (usually once a week) Verizon signal would die completely, but usually with AT&T I could manage a call or text.  Very odd.

Anyway, I'm actually hoping the Tablet won't come with any partnering, or at least an option to just be wireless only.  I don't know if I can handle a whole big round of phone provider changing and anguish again.  Honestly I wish there would be more engineering investment in just having wireless available everywhere and phasing out these annoying phone companies and their stupid 2-year contracts.

Yeah I hope this iPad-thing has no carrier commitment, or like you said and have an option for wireless only.

Current [ur=http://www.pcworld.com/article/187451/verizon_and_atandt_may_both_get_apple_tablet.html/l]speculation[/url] is Verizon and AT&T both:

Quote
Apple is in talks to bring its rumored tablet device to the 3G networks of both Verizon and AT&T, according to reports. Since Verizon uses the wireless network standard called CDMA, and AT&T uses the GSM standard, Apple may have to produce two different versions of the device, according to a report at Fox News. Then again, a "world edition" device that runs on both network types may not be out of the question--assuming Apple's new product will have cellular connectivity at all.

If there is a no-carrier option, expect to pay about $300 more up front for the device.
