Had an odd thought today. I remember a scene from Felicity where one of the characters gets suddenly run over by a bus

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wisMigONTek&t=15

You know this scene now. Music is generic or there is no music at all. Shot is fairly wide on the subject and static. With little or no warning, subject is knocked offscreen by an oncoming vehicle.

This is a scene that has been used so many times since that it is pretty much impossible to do anymore. I was watching a bit of the movie "One Day" and the scene was telegraphed so badly that is was almost comical http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nkN_g-KoDk

So, it turns out that the Felicity scene aired in early 1999.

Prior to this, there is this scene from Meet Joe Black (1998), although it is a little different.

There's actually a tv tropes page on this, although they are very loose with the definition, and they include comedy when this is specifically the dramatic version of the accident.

Can anyone remember a scene like this from prior to 1998-1999?

Meet Joe Black is the first one of these I remember.  Most memorable thing about the movie, which isn't saying much, but it was a pretty memorable moment.  Also he liked peanut butter.

I remember a moment, too, in Erin Brokovich where Julia Roberts got in a car, drove off and got plowed into all in one shot.

These kind of things were startlingly impressive back in the day, but they've definitely lost their impact.

Equal to this is the "shot in a car where the characters get t-boned" scene.  Oddly, the first one of those I remember is from another JJ show: Alias.

I think most people know this trope so well by now that they can predict when it will happen. The film language for it is pretty standardized too.

However, there have been a few shows recently have had scenes that look perfect for a Hit by Bus moment, but thankfully they didn't.

Makes me want to go out and run down pedestrians. Squishy bastards.

A company that I used to work for had a "hit by a bus" policy. To wit, we were expected to document our work so well that someone else could take over if we were hit by a bus. "Getting hit by a bus" was, of course, our employer's euphemism for being fired.
