So, I was watching the very first star wars movie again last night, and it had begun to look a little dated...so I though, who would make a good Han Solo now, Princess Leia and so on..

And the thing is, if someone took the movie, like so many other movies are being done with today, and did a completely new edition of it, would you watch it?

And who would you want in the different roles?

It'll be a while before Star Wars needs a remake, although the first round of effects updates did do a lot for it (the first round, not the latest updates that butchered it).

It'd have to be after Lucas dies so that he could have no influence on the project anymore.  Sorry, but unless Lucas gets his artistic integrity back, or at least gets someone willing to, and with the power to stand up to Lucas, there's no chance any further Star Wars projects would be good (unless Lucas' only role was to approve art designs).

Christian Bale as Luke?  Perhaps when he was younger.

I doubt we'll ever see it happen. Star Wars IV is a classic like a good Errol Flynn or Humphrey Bogart movie, because of that it'll stand the test of time for most people. Personally, if Lucas Arts was willing to go with a new Luke, Han and Leia I'd rather they make 3 movies based on the Thrawn Trilogy that follows the existing movies.

I could see Christian Bale working as a Luke or Han. Not sure about who'd play Leia or more importantly Mara Jade. Somehow Viggo Mortensen seems to fit my picture of a Grand Admiral Thrawn; yeah Viggo with gray-blue skin.  icon_wink  All I ask is that if they do it, please, please let Perter Jackson direct it.

I tend to think that the story is a little too distinct and well known to be remade. Sure, you might be able to do it with Star Trek... because the original series wasn't one film or a trilogy of movies, but 79 television episodes and six (somewhat) separate movies. And you can do it with comic book characters because heck, there are already so many takes on them within the comic book industry itself. But Star Wars (i.e., A New Hope) is Star Wars. It's a movie that spawned its own universe. And many would argue the original trilogy (or even just its first two parts) were the only decent thing about that universe.

I can see someone other than Lucas doing a good job re-envisioning the franchise, sure. Someone like J.J. Abrams or Christopher Nolan (and those who influenced them). But through a completely new trilogy, or series.

While I'm sure there are exceptions (such as James Bond), I tend to think of superhero movies as the exception when it comes to recasting characters in film series. And then, only because we're used to it and these characters seem to have so popular an appeal through the generations. But other than this, isn't it generally agreed that the vast majority of remakes are mistakes? I don't know why you'd want to see one of the most popular films of all time remade.

Remake episodes 1-3, instead. icon_razz  But seriously, with such a large universe, I think someone could pick out a corner (or create a new one) with which to reinvent Star Wars for a new generation without the silliness Lucas has injected into the modern franchise.

Edit: I should have included classics of literature, etc. as another genre which I think it's fine to remake. Every now and again I'm surprised by the modern production of a classic that actually surpasses the 30s or 40s version. And then there are the multi-part miniseries that do justice to these often giant stories that no film could.

I was thinking the other day about whether I'd be alive for when the inevitable Star Wars remakes are done.  I figue Lucas will not be around for this to happen so I don't expect it anytime soon.

They will be remade and they will suck. It's a fact. Hopefully it wont be for another 20 years or something.

I would be interested if they do another series of movies that take place after the original trilogy, but hopefully Lucas is not involved with the script.

Star Wars isn't the same without insanely detailed miniatures.
Oh, and without an actual plot and characters you don't wish would die already.

Hmm, if Peter jackson got his hands on it, and went the same way as he did with LOTR, i.e. blood and gore, made it an adult movie, catering to those who saw the original back in the day, it would be totally awesome...

I agree. I want Lucas absolutely nowhere near those movies again. He already screwed it up before (Han SHOT FIRST!), and he'd only make it worse if allowed to again.

has anyone ever done a remake of a trilogy (other than Japanese horror films)?   Anyways, if there ever was a re-make it'd be so far down the road I doubt any of the current popular actors would fit most of the roles.

Gillian Anderson is a wooden and lifeless actress.  She's good to play an inanimate object if the script calls for it....

George Clooney as Han Solo
Brad Pitt as Luke Skywalker
Eva Mendes as Princess Leia
Morgan Freeman as Obi Wan Kenobi
Hugh Laurie as C-3PO
David Carradine as Grand Moff Tarkin
John Goodman as Porkins
Steve Buscemi as Greedo
Clancy Brown as Darth Vader

Directed/Produced by the Coen Brothers.

At the very least, it'd be interesting!  icon_wink

I'm having a hard time envisioning Gillian Anderson as Mara Jade too. For one she's far too old to play Mara during the Thrawn era and she isn't nearly athletic or fit enough. Honestly if they were to make a movie of the 1s book in the trilogy within the next 5 years, I think they'd have to go looking for currently unknown talent to fill the role of Mara.

Nah, they'd just have Scarlett Johansson dye her hair.

You know, I'd rather they remade the prequels.

I suppose by the time they actually remade star wars the whole digital actors technology could be perfected so they could just slightly update the original 3, only slight updates akin to the first series of fixes, then use digital actors modeled after the original actors to make sequels.

Good call. I think if they remake the original trilogy that's likely how they'll do it. Although we could still be 10 years away before CG animation technology advances in quality to where it could be pulled off. I'd like to see the Tales of the Jedi and KotOR prequels made, but because those stories were told in comics and video games I suspect Lucas Arts would opt for CG animation.

As much as I like her looks and some of her work -much of it I don't- I'm afraid she's a bit too old for Leia, even if you're talking about casting her in the Thrawn trilogy sequel. She's currently 35 and by the time they got around to shooting she'd likely be 40. Whereas Leia is still only in her mid 20's even at the begining of the Thrawn trilogy.

Didnt he just mope a bit in Pirates? I'm sorry, but not impressed with him at all...

Christian Bale as Han? yes, now THAT would work.

As for raping childhood, well - there's no originality left, all you are going to see is remakes for major movies it seems, so - why not make the best of it, they could actually be good, like Batman...
