and Lucas is going to produce the whole first season before finding a network.  C'Mon George, there is still good in you, I can feel it.

No major characters and set in the time frame between Episodes III and IV, maybe we can avoid what some people call 'the raping of some childhood memories' this time.

I reserve judgment until I see the actual finished product.  Remember the Phantom Menace trailer?  It had me hyped with its classical Star Wars music and action/special effect shots.  Then I saw the actual film. icon_eek

I'm sure Lucas can make a great trailer for the show with pretty special effects, but will there be a decent weekly story?

Regardless, I'm sure the first few episodes will get crazy viewership numbers.

With all the movies, TV series, books and video games set between the whole Ep II - IV timeframe, I think I'm done with that timeline. Why the heck can't we get a Star Wars series set in the Old Republic!? There's so many cool and great characters to run with in that era. I can't see how a TV series, or movie, from that era wouldn't be a hit if placed in the hands of the right producer and director. Which translated means; if George Lucas doesn't get anywhere near it.

I'd rather go post-RotJ.  Re-cast the main characters and let's go with Heir to the Empire.

While the star wars movies are awesome, please don't include any characters we've ever heard of in the tv series.

That way we can have a story about a core group of characters, set against the backdrop of the star wars universe - maybe catch the occasional glimpse of vader / storm troopers - but let the show be about living your life in a civilization under empire rule.

Hell. If it was set during the time-frame of the trilogy maybe the second season finale could take place on Cloud City, with our new heroes just happening to be there, dealing with their own personal problem, while the events of the climax of episode five happen around them. You maybe catch a glimpse of vader walking the halls, and that's it. Nothing else that ties the show to the movie. That would be neat.

well, most if not all(except Obi Wan)of the Jedi's are extinct..right?...so are we expecting very little Jedi action in this series then?....only Sith/Dark Jedi for Light Sabre action...or is there gonna be 'another' Jedi in hiding that they have done a thousand times already?

i think this will be less like the Holiday Special but more like the Ewok films(Battle for endor and caravan of courage)...yes,its gonna be crap, but i am always willing to give anything star wars related a go...i gave that new Clone Wars game a go with the demo on XBL(wish i hadn't)

I'm hoping for absolutely zero jedi in the show.  Star Wars has become a little too fixated on Jedi as of late, ignoring just as interesting aspects of the universe.

You should all read the Wikipedia page for the series.

There aren't going to be any jedi or sith (though they'll be mentioned), and the tone of the show will be mature. Battlestar Galactica and Firefly have been cited as influences.

Eh... I think even with that page, we all know the horror stories of Lucas' meddling and the bad aftertaste of the Prequels, and the unneeded changing of the original trilogy.

ok for the record its not a sit-com,  its an animated series.  Who knows where hes going with it but there are some decent people attached and with everyone from Family Guy to Robot Chicken cashing in on the comedic cash cow, you expect George to just sit back?  Hell, if anyone has the right to poke fun at Star Wars, its Lucas.

If Lucas is going to produce it, it will suck unless all he does is sign checks.  If he has any decision making or creative control over this it will absolutely, unspeakably bad.  Do not kid yourselves, of all the star wars shows out there, the only good ones have these two qualities:
a) Lucas did not exercise full creative control (includes Star Wars because he had to sell the concept to a studio to get it funded & made)
b) He was completely removed from the project (many of the comics & animated series).

Star Wars captured my imagination, I was 7 (Lucas had to reign himself in to 'sell' this to the studio).  Empire Strikes Back was excellent, it was darker and Lucas did not direct it.  Return of the Jedi: Ewoks vs. storm troopers.  Enough said. Episodes 1-3 and all their craptacularness: don't think I have to say anything more.

He needs to remove himself from the franchise and let fresh blood take over.  This is one series that really could do with a reboot.

edit:
Quote
Lucas will write and produce the first season, and then "hand it off from there", while remaining executive producer and general overseer throughout the rest of the series. The style of the series will be similar to Lucas' Young Indiana Jones TV series.[7] Lucas has stated that, in producing the show, "we will do what would typically cost $20 million, for $1 million."[8]

This confirms it, the first season will suck, and his being the overseer of the following seasons will keep it from getting any better, if it survives past one season.

I think others may disagree about it not being a sitcom (and that was just one link on page one of the search I did).  personally I'm expecting a Gungan/Ewok odd couple who adopts a little Jawa with a effeminate Hutt as their next door neighbor and a former Sith as the landlord.

Clone Wars is ok until you think about it.

1. You realize that no important is going to die and nothing is going to be discovered.  Anakin, Obi-Wan, Mace, Yoda, Palpatine, etc. all will be living and in basically the same place when the show ends.  They have to be for the movie.  So there is no tension when Obi-wan almost falls off the ledge because you know he will be fine.  You never wonder if they will discover Palpatine is evil because you know they don't.

2. You know Anakin is actually going to kill or help kill the people he is working with.  He is bonding with NIps...does he slit her throat or does he just help?  It is impossible to really "cheer" for him when you know he will become a baby killer. (Perhaps that scene in Ep 3 affected me more than some people.  Killing kids just pushed him into the type of character I didn't want to be saved by Luke)  He is one of the most cruel and immoral people in the SW universe.  I just can't like him knowing that.

3.  (Goes with #1) You know that none of it matters.  We know Palpatine will be tossed down a shaft on the 2nd death star, we know Anakin will kill Obi-wan, we know basically everything so we know that nothing we watch matters.

4. It gets really annoying how stupid the Jedi are.  Week after week they do stupid things, are arrogant, are shortsighted, etc.  Heck you start to feel they deserve to be wiped out.

However it sure looks pretty.

And, see, I look at all of those points and am continually impressed by how they continue to pull off well-crafted and entertaining stories.

If you watch the behind-the-scenes stuff on the DVD, you'll find that they're aware of pretty much everything you've mentioned, and they've used those hurdles to their advantage.  They're very frank.  They'll even mention George's involvement in less-than-flattering terms sometimes - not bitching or ripping him apart or anything (they still want jobs), but they'll be very matter-of-fact about having to use Jar Jar, for example.

Hell, there are a ton of shows that have the problems you mentioned.  Even Gilligan's Island (maybe not the best example of quality television, but still).  You know they won't get rescued, because then the show will be over.  Or it'll be a weak TV Movie.

Clone Wars was good because it had some luminaries of writing and animation attached to it, and Lucas, while present, was less involved because it's a cartoon.  Clone Wars brought back some of the magic, but it's only an improvement from the prequels.

However, anything live action Lucas will have his grubby paws all over it.  I'd rather he just retire, or even die.  Not that I wish death on Lucas, that'd be just silly, but unless Lucas has an epiphany, which is doubtful since he's surrounded himself with yes men, or he dies/retires then star wars will just keep spiraling downward until no one remembers what made it so good.

Hell, even the madman that is Kojima writes better than Lucas, and Kojima knows that he needs to let go of the MGS series, unlike Lucas.

Skipping your other points, I believe this is actually a major motif in the new trilogy. The Jedi Order has become convoluted, ritualistic, ineffective and blind. The new trilogy points these things out in some subtle and some less subtle ways, for example through the fact that they are unable to see Palpatine's plot under their very nose. They don't even allow their Jedi to love, which turns out to be a pointless and even dangerous (look at Anakin) gesture. Their prophecy says that Anakin will bring balance to the Force, but they don't realize that it will be through wiping out the Jedi Order (through Anakin) and then rebuilding it from scratch (through Luke) with new and improved ideals.
