Yep I meant Lucas Films, but Lucas Arts chucking it as well would probably improve things too.

LeChucking it then? I agree though. I know it likely won't happen, but I do wish they'd take at least some inspiration from the EU while moving forward as it does include some good characters. I like how the Thrawn trilogy handled the clone wars better than the Prequels however invalidated it may be and we'll never see anything of that nature, but any new SW could still feature the characters and have them going in a new direction.

The most recent unconfirmed rumor concerning the film states that Harrison Ford is in talks to reprise his role as Han Solo, and now a new rumor has surfaced that suggests Solo will be joined by his pals Luke and Leia, as Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher may or may not be returning in a storyline that focuses on the trio’s children.

Before we get too far into this, it’s important to note that at this point nobody knows anything, so take the following rumor with the biggest heap of salt possible.  That being said, a report at Showbiz 411 claims that Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher will be reprising their roles as Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia.  Moreover, the story apparently revolves around the children of the original trilogy’s main characters, as their spawn has been tapped as the new trilogy’s protagonists.

John Williams Hoping to Score New STAR WARS Films

“We’re about to play Star Wars and each time we play it, I’m reminded of the first time we played it decades ago. Neither I, nor George, nor anyone else involved thought this would go far or in a few years there would be a sequel and I’d have to revisit the themes…and years later another trilogy. Now we’re hearing of a new set of movies coming in 2015, 2016…so I need to make sure I’m still ready to go in a few years for what I hope would be continued work with George.”

This is in no way a confirmation that Williams is absolutely coming back to score the new Star Wars films, and it’s such early days on Episode VII that I’m sure a decision as to the film’s composer hasn’t been solidified just yet, but it definitely sounds like Williams is operating under the assumption that he’ll be asked back.

The ironic thing about that is that John Williams completely ripped off Gustav Holst's The Planets, and I do mean ripped off. Some of the most memorable parts of the Star Wars soundtrack are lifted almost note for note from The Planets, and particularly Mars: Bringer of War.

John Williams is incredibly talented, but I'm confident someone else would be able to carry the mantle if he ends up unable to. It might not be exactly the same, but I don't think most people would really notice until they saw a different name in the credits.

No, it's simpler than that: You're misunderstanding what I'm saying. You could listen to Venus too, or any of the other pieces. Gustav Holst introduced a certain way of using orchestral instruments in unison, a new way of layering them to create new sounds, and a new way of building mood with each individual one. Brass in particular got a much bigger role in the orchestra, a role it has kept to this day, after having served as background instruments up until then. John Williams replicates this style completely, to the point where his style and Gustav Holst's style are impossible to separate from each other without being aware of the individual pieces. Here's an interesting tidbit: Fantasy Flight Games, which has the Star Wars miniature license, produced a video tutorial for their X-Wing Miniatures game. That video tutorial has a soundtrack. FFG does not have the license to use John Williams' score. Instead they used Gustav Holst's music (Venus, I think. Not quite sure right now). Nobody noticed the difference, except for a few people who went "I don't remember which part of the movies this music is from".

I'm not trying to belittle Williams' music, which I've always admired. Just pointing out that it's not quite so unique and original as many people assume it is.

My local gaming store got the promo pack containing a Millennium Falcon, Slave-1, two TIE Interceptors and two A-Wings. It's meant for running contests where the winners can take home a ship of their choice. Instead my store put all the boxes on the shelf, and I accidentally stumbled upon them early one day. I took one quick look, then bought them all. Took me all of a minute. It sucks that I haven't had many opportunities to play with them though, even though I've had these things since December. Got in one match that featured one A-Wing and Slave-1, and it was very fun. Slave-1 is a beast, but it's also sluggish and easy to evade with an A-Wing.

I'm going to get two more TIE Interceptors as I can easily see them being used in larger groups. The A-Wing would be useless in such groups however, so two is more than enough of that ship.

According to Hamill, Lucas told them about the sale and their proposed involvement in the new trilogy, but that if they didn't want to return they'd "write them out" ie kill them off screen like Hicks in Alien 3.

Hamill told Entertainment Tonight that no contracts have been signed, but it seems clear that neither Hamill nor Fisher wanted to be killed off since they're both slated to meet with Kathleen Kennedy and screenwriter Michael Arndt in the near future.

Hamill further speculates he'd take on an Obi-Wan style mentor position and the films will be about the trio's kids, but it's only speculation at this point

That's not also not what Tilt is arguing.

John Williams can borrow from Holst, Mahler, Dvorak, Delerue, etc. and it will STILL sound like Williams.

James Horner can borrow from Copland and Rota and Prokofiev, etc. and it will STILL sound like Horner.

Hans Zimmer can borrow from Holst, Morricone, etc. and it will STILL sound like Zimmer.

I know all movie score composers borrow.  They borrow from other composers, and they borrow from themselves.  I know this more than most, as my several hundred CD soundtrack collection attests.  Yet, their music has an identity, a voice, that is THEIR OWN.  

Star Wars may owe something to Holst.  But it sounds like Williams, not Holst.
