it had some of the worst dialog I've heard since I tried reading George RR Martin.

This invalidates your entire post as far as I'm concerned.

Why?  Because he doesn't like George RR Martin?

Yes.

More specifically I personally feel that writing dialogue is what Martin does best.  I can understand not liking he books.  But I cannot understand not liking them because of the dialogue.  Just my opinion of course.

I loved the disclaimer at the beginning -

It basically said - This show has lots of brutality, gore, blood, sex and nakedness.  But that's just because we're striving for an accurate representation of the time period.

Every time they showed some naked chick my wife would give me that look and I'd say - hey, they're just trying to portray the time period accurately...

I thought it was pretty funny, even if unintentionally.

Maybe a little... but I quit reading his first book because of the sophomoric dialog... something about letting an army and their horses fuck someone... I can't remember the exact quote anymore.

Regardless... the dialog in Spartacus is actually somehow, inconceivably, far, far worse.

They're gladiators...you don't expect them to have Shakespeare-like insights on the meaning of life, do you?  icon_lol

I'm kinda liking it and have started to care a bit about the main characters. And I don't know how old Lucy Lawless is (41 according to wiki), but she is smoking hot.

caught up with it lastnight for ep#2.

First thoughts - wholly Beefcake Batman! Talk about sweaty six packs galore. If I was a pole smoker I would be excited to say the least. However I did enjoy the gratuitous boobie / lesbosian shot from time to time to help rid the mind of the sausage festivus.

The show thus far is a mix of Gladiator (revenge dead wife) 300 (cinematics / blood spurts) and Braveheart (trying desperately to hold onto the bit of cloth a la William Wallace) whilst he is being beaten.

Dialogue with the gladiators is laughable at best-  I got tired of them all laughing each time a pleb was beat down/cut down etc etc.

I may give it another go - it helps pass the time before THE PACIFIC!!!

This show went from 0 to 60 WPM (Wangs per Minute) in only two episodes.  Now it vacillates between Red Shoe Diaries and Queer as Folk and the movie 300 as written by John Wayne Gacy.

I can't stop watching, though.  It's like Heroes:  I need to see who's gonna make it out of car wreck...me or the show.

A scriptwriter's session for Spartacus:

writer 1:  And I think we need to introduce Napoleon as his arch nemesis at this juncture!

writer 2:  But Napoleon wasn't even born until...

writer 1:  BOOBIES!

writer 2:  Ah, good point.

My wife and I finally got around to checking this show out on-demand.  We got about 15 minutes in before we turned it off in disgust.  What a terrible, terrible show.  We then started watching The Tudors.  Much better.  smile

For me it has become better with each episode.  This last one totally surprised me...mostly I guess because of the path the movie took.

Was Theocoles supposed to be human or more akin to some the fantasy garbage trotted out during The 300?

The first two episodes really blew chunks.  From there it improves steadily and I'd say that episodes 4,5,and 6 have been quite enjoyable.

I'll also echo what someone said on Qt3.  Thirteen year old boy mode: Did you see the slave that Batiatus was with in the bath in the lastest episode?   drool

I'm loving the show so far! The only two tv shows I even watch are Spartacus and 24.

I love how there are some critics out there talking about the female nudity or how "degrading to women" it can be. Yet, no mention of all the male nudity, half naked sweaty men man handling eachother and being forced to fight to the death, how every dude has a 6 pack of abs, or even the completely nude man on man "locker room" fight.
No no.. it's all about how degrading to women this show can be! I guess we as men then, by the same token, should be talking about how degrading the show is to men, right?
Yet as a man, I take no offense to anything in the show and agree with a few others here that it seems to be getting better and better with each episode.

Just amazes me how hypocritical some people can be. Lets make a show of half naked women battling eachother to the death, walking around naked everywhere, lesbian gladiators, a head slave master who has his way with the head female gladiator, and of course all of them are in excellent shape.. imagine that! slywink
Nah, that'd be too degrading to women though.

In all honesty though - Spartacus is definitely turning out to be one hell of a show. It's enough to actually keep me subscribed to Starz.

As for the last episode of the promise to be reunited with his wife.. damn..

Doctore is the Slave Master who owns the Gladiator school.  I can't see him joining a  rebellion.  Or did you mean the Lead Trainer (can't recall his name) with the whip?

according to the casting Doctore is the retired gladiator that trains all the gladiators, Batiatus owns the school and his wife is Lucretia/Xena.  Glaber is the Roman that captured Spartacus.

Am pretty sure Crixus and Varro will through in with Spartacus when the tie comes but Doctore (or whoever he is...the big black dude with the whip) not so sure.

Just got done watching the last 3 episodes and agree the series has improved. But not by much. I can't say I'm invested in any of the characters but I did like both "The Pit" and "Shadow Games" storylines - plus that final battle against Occulus (or whatever the giants name was) was pretty damn decent. I'll still keep watching but its one of those series where you know you should stop watching cause its not that good but just can't - like Heroes.
