trailer

violence
arena battles
sex
blood
and Lucy Lawless

what more do you want in a TV series? It's like a combination of Rome and 300.

I'll catch it on DVD when it releases.  No need to sign up for Starz.

it's actually included with the basic digital cable package if you have Wide Open West.  I wonder if they'll do the samething they've done with Crash and have it available it on Netflix watch it now service as the seasons progresses.

Yeah, that was a bad move.  I read somewhere that it was originally scheduled for 5 years, and they had most of the show already plotted out.

Well it wasn't great but it wasn't terrible. A mixture of things.

First, the bad.
1) the "CGI". I put it in quotations because it is so bad and excessively used that I'm not sure it even counts as cgi. The show would be a lot better without so much of it.
2) Gore for the sake of gore. They beat you over the head with it, and the constant blood sprays are getting old at the end of the 1st episode. Stop trying to be "300"!

The good.
1) The plot itself isn't bad so far. We have several interesting characters with conflicting motivations and goals. They've set the basic storyline up well.
2) The boobs. They're everywhere, and some of them are glorious. In fact, when they are panning through the room right before the gladiators are introduced at the 'party' they have a lady with a pair of breasts that look simply perfect. She should be in every show.

The mixed.
1) The acting. It's uneven, with some people doing a better job than others. To be expected, really.

Overall I'll watch a second episode and give it that much of a try.

I'm not impressed with the first episode. The show has promise, but only if they stop all of the fucking slow-mo and blood sprays (and stop magically manifesting tears in people's faces in less than a second). I don't think I exaggerate when I say that roughly 1/4 of the episode was in slow motion. That effect can be cool, but only when it's used sparingly and as an exception, not a rule.

On the other hand, it's refreshing to see a show with full frontal and swearing that isn't on HBO.

Agreed on all accounts.

The sad part was I found myself just wondering the whole time how much money HBO must have spent on Rome to make it look so good, because this just looked like a cheap production in a number of sequences.  Now a part of this was due to my watching on a new TV that apparently needs some adjusting (it's making a lot of HD stuff like kind of cheesy).  But for the most part it just made me want to rush out and buy the Blu-Ray of Rome and re-watch it.  I'm hoping the show will get better once he becomes a full slave/gladiator.  But more than that I'm hoping A Game of Throne won't suck (luckily on HBO)!

It was... ok. As noted, got tired of the "300-esque" slo-mo gouts of blood and the thought that those blades could cleanly sever a limb in one blow. So, is this not in HD? I missed the original broadcast on Starz and watched this on Encore last night in all of its glorious SD.

For something that will seemingly focus on gladiatorial combat, I was disappointed to see they stuck with the old thumbs up/down for live/die when that wasn't the case historically... but I guess that's what everyone would be expecting and we wouldn't want to confuse our audience. The thumb had great power, represented a sword (amongst other things) and using it 'turned' or 'Pollice verso' was death. Be it sideways or stabbing up as if into a heart it was a signal for the kill. A closed fist, the thumb pressed against the fingers or (according to Pliny) turned down meant approval or mercy, as in either put the sword away or plunge it into the sand. Obviously there's disagreement out there as Latin can be less than precise at times but it certainly wasn't a simple thumbs up or thumbs down.

Me too.  Even before I saw Lucy Lawless, I kept thinking it was like a NC-17 version of Xena.  That's good enough for me.

I'm not rushing out to subscribe to Starz, but I'll rent or buy-it-on-sale at some point down the road.

I kinda liked it myself, though I tried not to compare it to anything.  Sure the blood and slomo was obnoxious but it just accenuates the fact that the whole thing shouldn't be taken seriosuly.  The action was pretty good minus the previous statement and overall I enjoyed myself.  The copious amounts of boobies didn't hurt.

Somehow I did not recognize Lucy Lawless, which charcter was she and did she show her boobs?

She was the red headed wife of the gladiator boss guy.  No boobage.  And no bush, like the blond giggles chick.

my biggest fear is that they've already demonstrated that they WILL show naked boobs on the elderly as well (if the panning shot across the gladiator coliseum is any indication of future shots), so...you know...be warned.   we could get an extended Esthelle Getty style sex scene without any prior notice.

despite the boobage this show was impossible to watch......you can only take slow motion blood letting for so long (hard to believe) before it looses its coolness.

the acting (if you call it that) pretty much sucked to.

Gladiator + HBO's Rome + 300 + Script written by a Starz exec's nephew = Spartacus: Blood and Sand

It was pretty bad but I'll watch a few more episodes before giving up on it.

That's too bad.  Spartacus with Kirk Douglas remains one of my all time favorite movies.  Too bad HBO didn't make it as, to me, Rome, was really well written.

This series does look like it was meant to appeal to the "300" crowd.

Well they knew it had the holy trinity of B's that plays to the demographic they are going after.  Blades, Blood and Boobs.  Not to be confused with the holy trinity of country music Booze, Babes and Bullets.

I'll watch it when I'm bored and remember to but I won't be setting time a side to do so.

This shit was terrible... aside from the well covered stupid constant slo mo, and the obvious cheap look of the whole thing, it had some of the worst dialog I've heard since I tried reading George RR Martin.

Guy: [ties a strip of his getup around his wife's leg] Keep this close to your thighs and it will make us both feel warm to know that it's there.

(paraphrased, but... pretty much that)

I also didn't realize they said 'cunts' so much.
