Given that the first track "Girlfriend" (vid, lower right)makes me want to claw my eardrums out? Though I don't care for her personally, I thoroughly enjoyed both of her first albums and listened to "Under My Skin" for a very very very long time- bothbeing moved by it and rocking out  to it. Next week her latest hits the shelves. What should I do!? |

Under My Skin was my favorite album of 2004 and it still holds up incredibly well today.
I actually listened to the song (and saw the video, she DANCES) yesterday as well as listed to an interview (if anybody's got Comcast, it's OnDemand). She says this album is more "playful" which sucks.
Her first album was so-so, but I like the grown-up vibe of Under My Skin. She's getting more "FUN!" on this one...and that doesn't sound good.

Regina Spector
Neko Case
Feist
Nina Nastasia
But Avril's last album was shockingly good for a "punk" "pop" teenager.

Fiona Apple's latest album was actually really good, too.
I have zero optimism that Avril Lavigne's will be any good, but I'm sure I will be hearing songs from it on the radio for far too long.

Suspected I'd heard Avril Lavigne while driving & randomly flipping radio channels this last week. Thought I recognized her sorta distinct but kinda girlish voice, plus the lyrics sounded, uh, trite. Recall "girfriend" was indeed repeatedly chanted; seeing this thread confirms it was her. Don't expect anything monumental (hell, tolerable) -teengirlpop w/ a repeat beat. Makes Fergilicious sound profound.

In fact, I've already thrown the disc, packaging and all, into the garbage.
It's self indulgent and obviously the product of far too many people telling her how great she is. Hopefully it's just a slump.
Alannis when through it with Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie and now Avril has too.
Worst record I've heard in a looonnnnnggggg time.

I listen to top 40 music (generally) for workouts, as the OccurancesOfRacialSlurs:BeatsPerMinute ratio is low. I also listen to Skrillex, which, if you hadn't experienced it, is much like listening to dance music from inside a fax machine. |
