I need a lawn mower.  I have a very small front lawn, no back lawn.  Front lawn is maybe... 12' x 15' or so?  Grass itself grows pretty thick, though.

I'm thinking this makes me a prime candidate for a manual reel mower.  Smaller storage footprint, no worrying about running over extension cords or having to store gasoline, extra exercise, and that "gee that's neat" feeling I get from using other old school devices like fountain pens and my auto-wind mechanical watch.

I've never used one, though, so I can't tell if this is just a neat idea in theory but a horrible horrible idea in practice.

Anyone have one and love it?  Had one and hated it?

From what I understand, they make nice new fangled ones that work just fine.

not from experience, but from people who've had them, best recommendation is to keep the grass short/on a short interval between cuttings as the longer it gets the more effort it's going to take.

we had one when I was growing up, used it for the tree lawn that was small, had annoying protrusions like the water main sticking up and a curb that wasn't constructed the best way.  It worked fine, mind you it was a bit of a work out, but it might help alleviate the pudgy pug syndrome slywink

Because the blades are between the wheels, cutting along the borders of the lawn can be a pain as the blades can't reach that part. Just a niggle though.

I've been considering the fancypants Fiskars one, which has the wheels arranged in such a way that the blades can reach as far as the wheels can:

Not sure if that price & size is overkill for my small lawn, though.  But on the other hand, I feel like breaking out the weedwhacker to get the edges every time I mow also seems overkill and counter to the whole "non-powered" concept.  But on the other other hand, even the "big" 18" Fiskars is still smaller than a powered mower would be.

Alrighty, bit the bullet.  I looked at that fancypants Fiskars one in a store and while it was smaller than a regular gas mower, it was still pretty damn big for a reel mower.  It also seemed to scream "I have a really weird futuristic hipster mower!" instead of "Yeah, I'm using an old-school push mower."  It also cost twice as much as the one I'll be giving a try:

Look out, grass.

Cool, give some impressions once you get a chance to try it out!  I'd be interested if the modern versions are much easier to use and could be used on a larger lawn as well.

I kept seeing the title to this thread and I said to myself "who in the hell has STRONG opinions on push mowers?" Then I decided I didn't. So I didn't respond.

Glad everything worked out though. I know the Amish people around here love those mowers.

Get a manual reel mower - not only do they have a retro, cool air about them, but they look like some awesome prop from a horror film.

PS. If you're getting one make sure to buy it in time for Halloween, and get some water soluble red paint for the blades and a few severed heads and hands.

If people are against open, spinning blades, they won't be for long.
You should take a lesson from CeeKay though- cutting your grass simply because the neighbors complain about the lawn is for chumps.
Masturbate on the sidewalk - the lawn will be the least of their concerns.

and in the glove compartment.

and some in the console if there is one.

and in their heating vents.

and underneath the sun visors.

and in the trunk.

and in the trunk underneath the spare tire.

I actually prefer the push non-motorized ones.  If you get a good one, and keep it sharp, they are far easier imo.  Unless your lawn is big enough to need a ride mower, I would choose the push reel anytime.
