This is pretty cool,it's a new Map App that shows the location of where every bomb hit London during the Blitz between October 1940-June 1941

Users can manipulate the map and zoom into specific streets or boroughs as well as find out what type of bomb was dropped where.

The website allows users to find out where and what sort of bombs fell in a given area, and explore photos from the Imperial War Museum and stories from those involved or affected by the war from the BBC's war archives.

The associated Android app also gives users an augmented reality view that allows them to point their phone at a street scene and, using the phone's camera and GPS, see a display of the bombs that fell nearby.

The English were very resilient, but I don't know if I'd go so far as to say the bombings had little effect.

Interesting stuff, guys. Esp. given that the Germans only had one operational bomber considered a long-range "heavy" bomber (though still just two engines), the Heinkel He 177:

Now if you read German prototype and project plane lists, they had all sorts of heavy bomber plans that never made it to production.

In other words (as I understand it anyway), most of the Blitz were by bombers more equivalent to say, a medium U.S. B-25 Mitchell, rather than our B-17/B-24s or the British Lancasters of the 1940s. You can only imagine what sort of horror the Germans might've wreaked with, say, hordes of B-29-ish heavy bombers back in 1940 -- I venture something like that would've been tougher for British Spitfires/Hurricanes to down quickly -- but thankfully we didn't find out.

I just meant that bombing the cities wasn't going to end the war, but had the Germans continued bombing the airfields they would have crippled the Royal Air Force.

Once I zoom in fairly close all the bombmarkers disappear and it seems to be continually updating or something. Site is getting hammered perhaps?

I was born in London in 1954. Moved to Bracknell shortly after and lived there till I was 10, then Canada. I remember as a kid finding old bomb shelters and turrets in the nearby woods and fields. My Dad was in Africa during the war. My mom who was single at the time told us that they got so use to the bombing that sometimes the siren's would go off and she would tell her day she'd be ok and stay home. One time a bomb hit so close to her house that while she was sleeping the concussion wave of a bomb blew out her bedroom window, where she happened to be sleeping and never woke up through the whole time. She woke later to find her bedroom and herself were covered in glass shards.

But Bracknell at the time looks to have just missed the bombs. Its about 20-30 miles West of the closest red dot.
