Second Screen?

So CBS made an announcement this morning that you can now have the "Second screen" experience courtesy of an app. With Smartglass and stuff like this, it got me wondering - does anyone here use that sort of stuff other than with sports?   With sports it makes total sense to me - stats, runners on, etc. but if I need info on a movie, IMDB kinda has me covered.  Am I missing out on some new way to watch TV, or just another distraction from the show itself?

JK, I keep hearing about this second screen business but personally I don't get it.  When I watch TV, I want to watch something good enough that I want to actually watch it and pay attention to it.  If it's lame, then why bother?  Or I suppose I could play a game or something but that kind of means I'm not really watching at all....

I've used it while watching The Walking Dead.  it's a bit like having a group of people over to watch tv.  you get trivia and polls every x minutes and the live forum is interesting to read in a hive mind sort of way. 

never used it for the other shows as I barely watch anything these days.

That's what I use Twitter for, especially for sports, but shows like Top Chef as well.

As Story Notes on AMC have become a new personal favorite, adding another dimension to films, especially those I've seen 1000 times, if the second screen option offers something comarable I might give it a try.  Haven't yet, but might consider it depending on the information provided.  But I'd prefer it for movies, not TV shows, as I don't really watch any outside of The Walking Dead.

It strikes me as a way for the networks to combat time shifting and commercial skipping (unless I'm misunderstanding how this second screen stuff works)
