According to CNN, US officials have said it will be this weekend.

I seriously doubt this will have any impact on the insurgency or Iraq in general but I could be wrong.  I bet it's televised in Iraq. I wonder if US news will show it or just the aftermath (not because of morbid curiousity but because I wonder how the story will be carried...)

This bears the overall question, "Will you watch?"  (ATB, I don't mean you inparticular)...

As much as I am sometimes in favor of capitol punishment, this isn't something I'm particularly interested in watching.  I think it's along the same lines of the OJ interview that was going to air -- some folks will flock to it, and others are disgusted by the idea it'll be on television (and of course others say that he shouldn't be executed to begin with, but that's another matter)

I can think of dumber things to do with Saddam, but not many.
What good can come of killing this tyrant?

This might just lead to the perfect upswing in violence so that Bush can announce his plan to send more troops over there after ignoring the advice of generals and the bipartisan council set up to determine a better plan.  That man seems to be the very definition of selective hearing, just waiting until somebody suggests what he already wants and ignoring everything else.

If you are looking to punish Saddam the way to do it isnt to kill him, its to let him sit in a jail cell for the rest of his natural life.    He is someone who used to know complete and total control over a country, and at a whim could do anything he wanted to anyone.   Keeping him alive and in captivity would be a far greater punishment then killing him will ever be.

yeah, lock him in a room and force him to listen to 'Bushism's' over and over again 24/7 for the rest of his life.

Except that like crime bosses and drug kingpins, I'm sure he'd find a way to run something from behind the jail cell.  And then insurgents raid the jail, free him and it becomes a bigger mess.

Of course killing him could make him a martyr...

An argument similar to that is the best I ever heard against capitol punishment...
The only negative is (since I live in Massachusetts), I know that here a 'life sentence' can means 4-6 years with weekends off for good behavior...

I am opposed to capital punishment under all circumstances, but it seems particularly silly here.

Saddam Hussein was a horrible ruthless dictator who was personally responsible for the deaths of tens or hundreds of thousands of people.  If anyone "deserves" to die for his crimes, it is clearly him.

However, executing Saddam will not right the scales of justice, nor will it serve any deterrent purpose.  It will not discourage other horrible ruthless dictators and there is little chance of Saddam escaping from prison to rule another country and repeat his misdeeds.

Taped...unclear if the tape will ever be shown although it will probably show up on the internet in days if not hours.

I'm all for the death penalty (I work in the corrections system and see how easy they have it - even murderers) but in this case, if Saddam is to be killed, why shouldn't Bush be noosed up beside him? Bush after all, is responsible for thousands of deaths (which continues to grow) with his war crimes by invading a sovereign nation without the support of the U.N. and much of the world.
And lets not even get into how many people have died due to U.S. sanctions..
Yeah yeah... Saddam was a bad guy.. but Bush is just as bad when it comes to world peace, except he wears a fancier suit and stutters a lot more.

This is precisely why the case wasn't tried in an international court.  A ruling against Saddam would have set a precedent.

Hold on.  I'm calling foul.  You all know I'm no fan of W, but to put him in the same club as Saddam Hussein is bordeline unconscionable.  The United States' use of military power in Iraq was questionable at best, and clearly abuses occurred, but Saddam Hussein gassed thousands of his own people and buried them in mass graves.  He committed torture, maimings and other atrocities.  Saddam was genuinely a bad guy and the United States was justified in taking him out of power.  Bush's mistakes were in lying to the American people about the reasons for invading Iraq (weapons of mass destruction? Please!) and failing to have any sort of plan for the administration of the country after the invasion.

Hmmm...a sham trial followed by a quick execution.  Oh, the irony...since that's essentially what they're executing Saddam for.

Some sources state over 600,000 dead Iraqi civilians.  Saddam's crimes were definitely heinous... and are definitely paled by comparison.

+1. I am for the death penalty too, but imagining how hard it must be to sit there and wait for your death, made me feel sorry for the guy. Then again, he put many people through even worse, he had it coming.

I was soiled by seeing this on TV, and worse, everytime someone in the house browses past FauxNews, they have the half severed head showing on the screen.  Sick, real sick.

I think there should be some hangin' for the lies and mess we are in over there, and it ain't Saddam I am talking about.

Yep, even as evil as Saddam was, it's truly sad to watch him be executed. Seeing anyone die is an unpleasant sight and it's sickening to think people actually get off on it. Pretty cold how they dropped the bottom out in the middle of his prayer.

The most unfortunate thing of all is that his death will just lead to more senseless violence in protest. It will never end.
