Yeah sure, but they're in the Comedy Hall of Fame. I mean how many rock bands can claim that honor. And to think I saw them live as a teeny bopper as a backup to Max Webster.  icon_eek

Is the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame only for American acts?  If so, that could explain it, since Rush is Canadian.

No, there are plenty of "international" acts.  But yeah, Rush is among many bands that are long past due for induction into the HOF.  In particular they tend to shun most acts with the taint of prog rock on them.

There is a bit of a bias though.  The last I knew The Guess Who wasnt in and they had a huge string of hits in the late 60's early 70's,  they happen to be canadian as well.

From the R&R Hall of Fame web site:
http://rockhall.com/inductees/induction-process/
Quote
To be eligible for induction as an artist (as a performer, composer, or musician) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the artist must have released a record, in the generally accepted sense of that phrase, at least 25 years prior to the year of induction; and have demonstrated unquestionable musical excellence.

We shall consider factors such as an artist's musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique, but musical excellence shall be the essential qualification of induction.
There's no mathematical formula that says if you did a few popular songs then BOOM you're in the Hall of Fame. Or that if you have the fastest drummer and guitar player, you'll get in.

It's a lot like the annual squabbling over the Oscars, Emmy awards, Grammies etc. i.e., how do you objectively evaluate "excellence," as opposed to what's trendy, what's selling, what the voters on whatever organization's board have the hots for etc.. In the end, if you think the R&R Hall of Fame, Academy, Grammy or whatever are a joke, then what does it even matter if they recognize your favorite performer? Just enjoy them and forget about those yahoos whose opinion you don't care about.  icon_smile

I did get to visit the R&R Hall of Fame in Cleveland during a business trip in May 2008. While it was fun to browse through, they don't allow photos whatsoever inside the building. Kind of a bummer.

Yeah, though by those standards, Rush and The Guess Who would definitely qualify. They've left their marks on the Canadian music scene, at least. I went to a Bachman Cummings concert a few years ago and It was quite epic, in that it was a sort of joint BTO/Guess Who tour, with lots of great hits.

The string of songs Bachman and Cummings slew together in the 70's was quite amazing. I think the 1 knock against the Guess Who is that they're weren't a band for long. Of course Buffalo Springfield got in and they lasted all of 3 years before they imploded from internal squabbling. The Guess Who were certainly popular enough in the US - IIRC their live album was recorded in Seattle. I think there's good cases for including both them and Rush in the Hall of Fame.

Yes, but he writes the songs...

Seriously though, I don't pay attention to who is and isn't in the RNRHOF because I would probably avoid anyone who is like I avoid movies that win oscars. It's all horsepucky. Thankfully I've never seen a record spouting that such and such is in the HOF like they splash "oscar award winning" all over movie covers.

The Sex Pistols sum up what I think of the RRHOF:

Edit: I was just going to leave it well enough alone with that statement, but I think this is even more telling:

Quote
As a group, Rush possesses 24 gold records and 14 platinum (3 multi-platinum) records. Rush's sales statistics place them third behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones for the most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band

it really is a crime that Rush hasnt been inducted.  Even if you dont like their music, you have to acknowledge the musical skill contained in Rush.  Neil Peart has more musical ability in his little finger than Madonna ever dreamed of having.

As far as The Guess Who, they took a major leap when Burton Cummings took over lead vocals in 1965.  Until his departure from the group in 1975, The Guess Who had a string of 18 top 40 hits.  Id say a strong ten years like that is more than most of the inductees in the HOF can claim.  Hell, they should be inducted for American Woman alone.

Yet a good portion of the music business is entertainment, and Madonna has more entertainment savvy in her little finger than Neil Peart ever dreamed of having.

I'm also a big Rush fan and wholeheartedly agree that it's a travesty that Rush isn't in the HOF.  But Madonna earned her spot in it as well.   smile

Yes Madonna is a genius.  She figured out that sex sells!  Granted it was during the 80's tenny bop era, which could certainly have used more sex but still.

It's hard to take the RnR Hall of Fame seriously when ABBA, Madonna, The Ink Spots, and Gene Pitney are in while Rush, Yes, Kiss, The Doobie Bros. and Cheap Trick are not.  I'm not a fan of all of those bands.  But it should be called the Entertainer's Hall of Fame, not the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

So what genre would ABBA be considered?  How do you define rock and roll...especially when you consider the multitude of influences rock and roll came from (blues, country, jazz, etc.)?

Same here.  Which is odd, considering most of my favorite bands would likely list Rush as a huge influence.

Rolling Stone always hated Chicago, even prior to their turn towards Adult Contemporary in the 80s.  And RS co-founder Jann Wenner pretty much has the final say in who gets nominated, so there you have it.

Even if you ignore everything they did after 1982, they are far more "rock" and far more successful in terms of sales, charting, etc. than many of those that have been inducted.
