Roger Ebert dies at 70 after battle with cancer.

Quote
Ebert, 70, who reviewed movies for the Chicago Sun-Times for 46 years and on TV for 31 years, and who was without question the nationís most prominent and influential film critic, died Thursday in Chicago. He had been in poor health over the past decade, battling cancers of the thyroid and salivary gland.

Yeah, he had announced he was getting radiation treatment, but I suspect his condition was far worse than he gave away in his final blog post.  tear

Although I certainly had different views of many movies than he did, I always enjoyed reading his reviews, even if had a different take. I bought many of his books over the years, or asked for them as gifts including his memoir book.

I found it very brave how hard he continued to work no matter what cancer threw at him. Even after the condition and related surgery took his voice, he still for a time conducted interviews, apparently by e-mail, with actors, directors etc.

I hope we all live long enough to see more cures for cancer. It just seems to impact everybody I know at some point -- it has killed coworker/friends, friends' parents, siblings, children (I attended a memorial service a couple years back when a friend's 21 year old son died of brain cancer). Chances are, someone you know at some point will die of cancer, and it sucks.  So insidious is the big C, and it's just so damn unmerciful and unrelenting and unfair.  icon_frown

Rest in Peace.  I didn't agree with all of his views, but he did bring a lot of different movies to the awareness of diverse audiences.

Well, the afterlife just got a great movie review show. R.I.P., Mr. Ebert, I always enjoyed his perspective, in whatever form that it was delivered.

I had just read yesterday that he was stepping back from reviewing for a while because the cancer had resurfaced, and that he'd only be doing a few reviews here and there... shocked to see that he died today.

Didn't always agree, but I could always see where he was coming from, and I think he did a better and more thoughtful job than a lot.  Bummer.

It's nice to see how all of Chicago is reacting to this.  He truly was well respected here.  RIP Ebert.   icon_frown

He kept the cynic out of being a critic.

RIP.

For the most part, I really appreciated his reviews and IMO he was 1 of the 1st film critics to review the SciFi and Fantasy genres fairly. I did't care for his opinion that vidoegames aren't art, but that was a small quibble in comparison to all of his other writing and verbal reviewing.

RIP Roger.

Ebert wrote this last July about the love affair with his wife. Both heartwarming and heartbreaking to read the day after his death. We should all be so lucky to have anything close to a relationship like this with a partner.

I think the perfect coda to this sad event is that today I opened up Rotten Tomatoes to see what rating the Conjuring was getting, then started looking for Ebert's review under the top critics section.   icon_cry
