Disney is thinking about a sequel or a reboot or something

I'll be surprised if this actually happens, or that it would happen the right way if it does, but if all the stars aligned, it could be very cool.

I know director Joe Johnston would love to do it, but judging by the Tron movie last summer, I suspect Disney would rather reboot it with some hot, young thing as director (probably someone who directs perfume commercials and/or music videos) and some hot young cast that nobody particularly wants to pay to see. I guess I'm cynical.  icon_neutral

Johnston is under contract for one more Marvel film (he supposedly declined to work on Captain America 2). I thought that would be a Winter Soldier spin-off of Cap, but I'm not sure that's in the cards in terms of JJ getting to do it. The Rocketeer isn't a Marvel property afik, but Disney owns Marvel now, so... there's some cross pollination there if they wanted it, I guess just in terms of Marvel and Disney being familiar with Joe.  icon_smile

The Rocketeer is one of my all time favorites.  I need to watch the blu ray version I bought not that long ago.  I'm not sure I want them messing with it, though.  It exists as an anomaly in filmmaking from that period.  A completely UNironic, non-self aware period piece that relied on honest sincerity for its impact.  I think that formula is why they chose Johnston for the Captain America movie.  He brought that same recipe and it worked.  A younger director without a sense of reverence for the time in question would probably just botch it by playing to a "hip" crowd.

I remember watching the Rocketeer years ago as a kid, not knowing that it was a flop and loving it, then waiting for the next Rocketeer movie to come out.

Well, 12-year-old Lee, here you go.
