The funny thing about his best lines in his best comedies (Airplane!, the short-lived Naked Gun TV series, and the first Naked Gun movie in '88) is that if you read them in print, they don't always sound all that hilarious. You have to envision him with his stoneface deadpan delivering them, and his physical comedy, and then you're in stitches.  I do remember some critics complained that after the first Naked Gun film he seemed to sort of "try too hard" to be funny in the sequels (less stone-faced deadpan), and sort of "cue" when something was funny instead of just delivering lines with that wonderful deadpan style of his. And most of the non-Naked Gun stuff he did without ZAZ (the Zucker brothers and Jim Abrams) was awful, often "direct to video" stuff. Sometimes it's funny to return to his pre-Airplane work and try to watch him acting "seriously" without laughing.  If you view his imdb page ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000558/), it seemed like he was in every TV series ever made in the early 1970s. |

Yep Leslie was the king of the dead pan delivery. He was at his best when playing his comic lines straight. surely, you will be missed.

I just bought the Naked Gun trilogy on DVD for dirt cheap to reminisce. Looking forward to it. Leslie Nielsen might be dead, but he lived a long life and left the rest of us with several great comedies that will live on for a long time. |
