I also am not a fan of movies where fantasy and sci-fi stuff both exist like they did in this one.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1411250/plotsummary

Apparently (according to imdb) it's in pre-production, slated for 2013 release, and the Plot overview is currently:

Quote
The Chronicles of Riddick: Dead Man Stalking (????) More at IMDbPro »
Untitled Chronicles of Riddick Sequel (original title)

Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction.

Now, he was betrayed by his own kind, and then goes to save his home planet? I'd say f***'em.

Looking forward to it.

Saw the original Pitch Black in an over crowded movie theater in South Florida and still remember people yelling and whistling when the short haired blonde woman crouched down to go into that tunnel.

Trailer has arrived. According to previous info this does follow on CoR, but it looks a lot like a reimagining of Pitch Black.

yeah, if the one Necromonger wasn't in there it could definitely be a reboot.  my theory is that he knows where they are, that's why he is making all the racket when he is locked up on the ship, but the creatures have changed since Pitch Black and he gets more than he bargained for.

I think the Necromangers are actually pretty cool.  It was just the addition to Riddick's history I disagreed with (as I mentioned before).  I'm perfectly fine with the inclusion of that group in the film as long as they make Riddick a believable but human(like) badass again.

reviews staring to roll out.  sounds like it is going to be decent but nothing stellar:

6.6 from IGN.

this review sounds less kind with 1 out of 5 stars.

Rotten Tomatoes: 57% critics, 76% audience.

My understanding is Vin Diesel conceptualized Riddick as a three part series with Chronicles as the original First story/film. However this was rejected by the Hollywood execs so Vin came up with Pitch Black which they liked and made a 2 picture deal for Pitch Black and Chronicles. The 2nd part of the original concept was to move on to an Underverse story line. I haven't seen the new picture yet but from the trailers I am rather disappointed as this seems like a rehash of Pitch Black, which was good movie but I wanted more of Vin's original vision.

I wish they would have taken the Chronicles of Riddick movie and adapted that into a Star Wars-esque trilogy. I know that Chronicles underperformed, but I don't know by what margin. Vin Diesel attributed it, in part, to the story being slightly disjointed due to about 15 minutes of film that was left on the cutting room floor, even after the slightly more cohesive Director's Cut, which added in the dream sequence. The cut portion took place when he was first taken prisoner, and it detailed how he escaped from their ship and what he witnessed during that escape.

Anyway, I saw this movie and enjoyed it. if you are a fan of Riddick (as I am) there is absolutely no reason not to see it. It is definitely not a reinvention of the first movie, but its scope is similar, unlike the larger universe being constructed in Chronicles.

Recommended.

The fiancee and I saw it last night.  I thought it was good, she was underwhelmed.  And she was the one that's the bigger fan of the films.

I went on a whim yesterday because I had some free time.

It ranged from painfully terrible, to Ok, to pretty fun and pretty good for a while, then kind of leveled out at underwhelming.

I just read this and thought it was interesting. kind of cool to see an actor be see passionate about a character:

When Universal wanted him for a cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, he asked for the rights to the Riddick character instead of an acting fee. Diesel and Twohy tackled the script problems and went into production on the threequel. When a completion bond fell through, Diesel personally advanced funds until bank loans were secured. Eventually Universal came back in with an equity position but also insisted on a PG13 rating. Diesel fought the studio for an R rating – and the result is more bone-crushing and blood gushing violence. Oh joy. As Diesel told interviewers pre-release: “There’s something appropriate and liberating and honest and free about going into a picture like this, and being able to make it a rated-R picture and not have to comply with an understandable studio mandate of PG filmmaking for the blockbusters.” (Is it any wonder that half of America hates Hollywood?) Now Riddick’s international release is being handled by various independent distributors and opens this weekend in 22 overseas markets including the UK and some European countries, Hong Kong, and the Middle East

This movie was so bad it made me angry.  I could watch Chronicles of Riddick any time it's on tv and enjoy it.  This was a ridiculously unnecessary Pitch Black remake.  It was awful.

Yeah I generally liked it too. The first half with him in survival mode worked a bit better for me than the second half where he was in predator mode. But I still enjoyed it - his character has a lot to do with it. I'd watch another one.

I would've preferred that the entire movie be more like the first half (or third, whatever).  But I fully expected the movie to be much, much worse.  Overall it was a fun film.  Not a great film, but a fun one.  And sometimes that's all I want.
