Hi!

Looking for a series to watch on DVD (the best way to watch tv).

Series I enjoyed with no reservations: Supernatural, Dexter, The Wire, Fringe

Series I enjoyed: Buffy, Dollhouse, Mentalist, Lie to Me, Sons of Anarchy, The Unit

Series I enjoyed despite glaring flaws: Lost, Heroes, Sopranos, Ghost Whisperer, Medium.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I love Rescue Me - I like a bunch of the shows you listed, although I can't say it's a lot like any of them.

since Babylon 5 was mentioned, Deep Space 9.

off the wall, but very funny:  Jeeves and Wooster.  Also, Black Adder

I've enjoyed seasons 1- 6 of Scrubs

Smallville  took some endurance, but the first couple seasons of Lois and Clark were good.

No Bones nor NCIS recommendations? seriously? Both shows have been going for what 6-7 seasons now, and are pretty damn awesome . Bones is a brilliant copshow with an anthropological edge to it, and some of the best chemistry I've seen between actors. NCIS is just brilliant, and keeps getting better.

huge  thumbsup for ncis.  i would give it the best nod for actor chemistry though.

i was going to try bones the first year and was immediately put off by the first episode.  there was a bit about "squints shouldn't do X" which i found horribly cliched in a bad 1980's way "oh yeah, i'll show him" and i was annoyed with the actors/characters early on.  i would assume it's ironed out the parts i found glaring though if it's gone that long.

a huge plus to breaking bad.  i have only now started to see a few episodes (thank you walking dead for following it) and it is a very dark and serious show with some great writing and characters.

i would add burn notice to the list.  and psych if you like a bit more comedy in your shows.  for more twisted comedy, always sunny in philadelphia

Forewarned is fore armed.  There is only one season of Firefly, so prepare to be disappointed when you realize there are not any more shows after the follow-on movie.  IMO, it was that good.

Same reccomendation. It's actually a pretty fantastic show - and yes just get through the first few episodes. Once the characters are established, and the whole love relationship solidified, the story takes off. And the story is good.

This is also another series like Walking Dead where they are not afraid to kill off regular characters.

How did we get way down here with no nods for the modern Doctor Who, and to some part, Torchwood?

The only torchwood that's even remotely good is the children's day miniseries.  The series proper was a mess and the latest miniseries became an inept comedy fairly quickly.

I can definitely recommend Justified and Ill also throw out Terriers, an excellent series that unfortunately got no pub and ended after one season.  That one season though is worth watching.  The other recommendation Ill throw out here is the BBC's fantastic series,  Sherlock.  Season 2 just wrapped up and the boxed set for both season 1 & 2 is available for pre order on Amazon UK.  I think I ended up paying just under $40 US for the set shipped and it will be here the beginning of February.

Very good choices.  The Shield is one of my favorite series, period, and I was surprised at just how much I enjoyed Firefly.

But, as theohall says, once you finish the series it is rather disappointing that it ends with the film Serenity.  Still, at least with the way the first season ends you still get satisfying closure in the storyline with the film.
