We purchased a fake black tree this year.  It's unbelievably awesome.

I prefer real (probably comes from growing up in Northern California and going out to mountains to chop one down)
There's just nothing like the smell of that real tree in your living room for Christmas.

Unfortunately Wife prefers fake and since we have an abundance of dumb animals that would love nothing more than to get at the water under the tree - I agreed to compromise and accept a fake one again this year. Typing this as wife and daughter are hanging ornaments on it.

It's really just not the same.

We've had real ones before but they're just too much hassle and maintenance so we got a reduction and went for the smaller, fake model. Wait, shouldn't it be the other way around.... what are we talking about again?

I have never had a real tree.

My wife has an allergy problem.  So I probably never will.

I wish I could though.  I really like how they look, but moreso how they smell.

We've had a fake one for about nine or ten years, and the last four it's been one that's pre-lit. It looks great and is pretty much hassle free. If I feel the need to experience a real tree then I can look out a window.

Maybe it's just be but I don't see the compromise here.  It looks like your wife simply won and convinced you that you were getting a compromise.

When it's all said and done, I prefer real.  That said I prefer fake from a setup point of view.  We usually wind up with real though as my wife prefers real.  We do have a fake tree that we setup in the kids playroom.  It's pre-lit and we don't bother with any decorations on it.  ATB is lucky to be living in NC now though.  He should have access to the abies fraseri now; the best Christmas tree evah.

We have tree dropoffs where the trees get chipped and re-cycled in one way or another (I doubt it would be compost; the chemical in the needles does not make for good growing).

If you're talking about the OTHER kind of fake being (re)used, they just use them as stress balls. Ooo, I think that might be a double entendre.

Just think of the mineral and petroleum use for the fake trees; I'm sure they're just as costly from an environmental standpoint, and it's not a renewable resource like a real tree.

Fake and pre-lit. Low hassle (pre-lit is awesome, looks good in 15 minutes), don't need the real deal messing with my allergies or the cleanup (pet needle chewing vomit and needles themselves).

Bzzt. Fail. Shopping for Christmas trees in NC sucks.  They sell Leyland cypress as christmas trees. It's basically a decorative fern...it is not and never will be a Christmas tree.  And the choose and cut places around Raleigh blow.

Oh and white pine FTW. Short needle trees are for n00bz.
