Wow, I usually don't believe the NFL to be this tone deaf.

In preparation for our Fantasy Football season, I've been listening to some preview podcasts.

Did you know that if a quarterback had the stats that the Saints D gave up last year, you would have had the 5th rated overall quarterback in the league?  Said another way, if you just threw caution to the wind and started whomever was playing the Saints, you would have been 5th overall.

That's insane.  On the plus side, they can't possibly be any worse this year.

Oh, and because of EJ Manuel's knee injury and Kolb's (at least) third concussion yesterday, it looks like the Bills are signing Matt Leinart so we don't have to field the rook in Week 1.

Aaaaaaand he's gone:

Quote
The former first-round draft pick tweeted Friday that he's been released by the Buffalo Bills just five days after being brought in to serve as a patch under center.
...
"Tough game. Tough situation. No excuses. (Thank) you to the Bills organization!" Leinart wrote Friday, before deleting the tweet.

The game was a reminder of why Leinart hasn't started since 2011. After fizzling out with the Oakland Raiders, Houston Texans and, initially, the Arizona Cardinals, who selected him No. 10 overall in the 2006 NFL Draft, the former USC glory boy is probably done in the NFL.

Jake Ballard was among the Pats cut on Friday.  That is surprising.  I would expect to see him re-signed after the start of the season if he isn't picked up by someone else.

Tebow is on the waiver wires!

So is Zoltan Mesko - the former punter.  That is a little sad.  True, his replacement makes 1/3 his salary and appears to kick about as well, but it's cool to have a guy on the team named Zoltan.

Also cut three DEs.  That is a bit unsettling.

In BB we trust, and all that jazz, but I sure hope this works.

Tebow at least has had some NFL experience, even if he's sitting at a 50% completion rate.  But I guess they don't want anything to take away from Ryan Mallett waiting in the wings.

3rd year, 1-4 for 17 yards last year and a pick.  That 5.2 QB rating really makes you believe that the Patriots are all-or-nothing on Brady.

2008: 11-5 under Matt Cassel starting 15 games.  2nd in the AFC East, no playoffs after losing tie-breakers for the division to Miami on division record and the WC to Baltimore on conference record.

Not exactly an implosion of epic proportions, but it made them miss the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

Wait, what should they be except all in for Brady?  And did you see Tebow in the preseason.  He simply can't pass.

And yeah, Cassel is the test case.  The schedule that year helped in being a bit easy, but getting time with the one's and simple repetition is going to make anyone better.  Throwing 4 passes in 2 years doesn't exactly keep skills at the highest level.

They've carried 2 qbs 4 of the last 5 years.  It's kind of their thing (although they are hardly alone).  But not all eggs in one basket.  If Brady goes down, they expect the next guy to step in and carry on without missing a beat just like any other position.  Who knows if that would happen.

I think the results they got out of Cassel were anomalous, and not likely to be repeated.  Also, Brady is 36.  Elway played until he was 38, and even that was commented on about him being old then.  Brady will be 38 if he comes back and signs a contract for 2015.

I really wish there was a Hard Knocks type show that went through the whole season. I can't imagine that wouldn't be a hit. I guess the hard part is getting a team to let you have full access for a whole year.

Ravens back in action tomorrow night and while I am happy to see the return of my team it has dawned on me this will be the first Ravens game of the post Ray Lewis era.   Sort of hesitant to get excited for football.. Don’t think the Ravens can do it again.  I think the Defense will be okay… it’s the Wide outs I am concerned about

Btw, the NFL screwed Baltimore by scheduling this game in Denver .  They could have played this game today instead of trying to get the Orioles to play a double header on Saturday.  O’s expected to be in a pennant race and shouldn’t have to comprise to sooth the NFL ‘s ego.  They moved the first game last year to Wednesday for the Giants and New York,,

Because I have to be up at work by 5 am I missed the game after the first quarter, but I'm glad I did. It appears the Broncos wanted to lay down the wood for being bumped last season

Anyway, first game of the season, so I'm unconcerned

Go Ravens

Couldn't be happier with my Saints.  After last year's horrible defense, they looked much improved, got to Ryan, and caused some turnovers.  Only allowing 17 points is a vast improvement.

The 'Hawks did well.   They held on and kept the offense contained when it mattered the most. And Wilson kept them alive.
