Our tests found that leaving a Playstation 3 on while not in use would cost almost... five times more than it would take to run a refrigerator for the same yearly period.

It's not clear what they mean by "on".  Do they mean you need to pull the plug, or is using the power button enough?

I don't leave mine on anyways unless I accidentally hit a button on the Blu Ray remote and it powers up with out me paying attention.

A powerbar with a switch would be best. But they're saying that using the power switch is better than the power from the remote.

I read that to mean leaving it fully on, like having folding@home running 24/7.  But then they go right on to to say...

The report advised consumers to switch off their electronic devices at the source, rather than just from the remote control, which puts them on power-consuming stand-by mode.

That makes me think they mean stand by mode consumes more energy then a fridge, which blows my mind if true.  I know devices in stand by suck back lots of electricity, but that 5x number seems really high.

I thought that the PS3 was supposed to be more power efficient than the 360. Was I lied to?

Not that surprising.  When I started unplugging my entertainment center stuff when not in use my power bill went down by almost $20/month.

Heh, it is more power efficient, but being more efficient than someone that's also inefficient isn't a good way to compare things.

It's really not a surprise considering these consoles are the equivalents of computers in terms of power drawing.

You need to get a fridge with a built in TV, and then you can hook up a console to it..

My fridge plays: "Hold the beer."

Without that, I see no point to living.

Don't forget the bonus level called "Keep beer cold."

I just bought a PS3 too. Good reminder to turn the damn thing off instead of putting it into standby.
