I didn't realize until recently that this is going to be based on the Tim Powers book - I don't know why I didn't make the connection. Tim Powers is about as awesome a fantasy author as you get. Strange, creative, bold. This really raises my interest after the disappointing 3rd movie.

Don't set the expectations too high.  I think they are just using the premise so they went ahead and bought the rights so there wouldn't be any lawsuits later.

Please no trilogy this time, Pirates 2 and 3 were ruined by trying to keep some kind of continuity beyond Pirates being Pirates.

Kinda always felt that Orlando was the cast's weakest link, so I'm ok with that.

I'm waiting for a buddy movie starring Orlando and Keaneau. They could call it "Woods and Woody".

I do have to say that this trailer doesn't seem to have the emotional draw or excitement building that the previous movies were able to instill in me.

In fact the whole tone of the trailer felt sort of low-key to me - which worries me a little about the movie. But perhaps that's a good thing thought - I'm going to see this regardless, only now my expectations have been lowered quite a bit.

Caught the preview for this when we saw Tron a while back.  While I'm indifferent on the movie itself (loved #1, #2 was OK, #3 was one of the lamest movies I've ever seen), I thought the 3D effects were laughably bad.  It looked like they did nothing more than clip out Johnny Depp in every scene, shove him to the foreground, and call it a day.  Really, really awful.

plus this, and further Pirates movies, will be standalone movies.  no more trying to shoehorn  them into a trilogy.

The first movie is probably my all-time favorite film. But the 2nd and 3rd films just didn't have the same feel to them. Felt like they were trying to tell too many stories at the same time and didn't take the time to really develop any of them. Because of that - some of the major changes in characters that occurred felt like they just came out of nowhere. I always thought they could have turned Pirates 2 and 3 into three (possibly four) much better movies.

So I'm hopeful that with the new storyline it'll go back to a single solid adventure with good action. The book it's based on is supposed to be good (going to read it as soon as I finish seeing the movie as I don't want any spoilers), but early reviews of the film I've seen online have all been fairly negative. So I'm setting my expectations low.

okay just got back from this, its on for roughly 130 minutes

This was no such great departure from the first three films, even though this time it's Rob Marshall directing and a lot of the original cast are missing,i enjoyed the film,it was better than number 3,but probably not as good as parts 1 and 2(IMO of course)

The Cast

you know what Johnny Depp is all about now as (captain)Jack Sparrow, well then expect the same, although this time some scenes with him do feel a bit hammy,or is that JD just having fun with the character?,i can never tell icon_confused

Geoffrey Rush is also back as Barbossa, only this time his interests are now for the current King of England(King George, played by Richard Griffiths)

Ian McShane i thought did a fine job as Blackbeard and Penelope Cruz is an ex of Jacks, although TBH i just couldn't figure out her character at all,but she does sometimes nearly burst out of her top thumbsup

The Story

Like Thor,i wont go into all the details

without giving too much away,it starts of in London, where King George wants Jack and Barbossa to work together to beat the Spanish to the Fountain of Youth

hmm,yup,that'll do

Special Effects

there were very few special effects in the film actually, sure the Mermaids..but it certainly didn't have as many special effects as the first 3 films(if you think about the cursed crew in the moonlight or Davy Jones and his crew)..and what special FX there were, they worked fine...but yeah, don't expect to see the film filled with them, because trying to think now,i would say about 10-15 minutes worth is all you will get in this one

there are a few big explosions though,so that's nice Tongue

3D

The 3D in the film went fine(i went to another cinema this time round),but to be honest there wasn't much need for the 3D,there were one or two scenes that i thought looked great in 3D the rest looked fine...but what really pissed me off,was the fact that they went to Friday the 13th part 3 or Jaws 3D tactics,as in point pointy things at the camera.Everytime Blackbeard got his sword out,he pointed it at the camera, felt a bit cheesy

gonna see this film in 2D?...you wont lose out

End of Credits

Did you stick around until the end of the credits in Pirates 3 for the extra scene?...well do the same for Pirates 4,there is a small scene waiting for you again

Summery

it's another fun film,no doubt, but no big laughs i thought though(like no hapless duo or funny monsters/crewmates) and no exciting sword fights like the one in the big water wheel thing in number 2,or the two ships in a whirlpool fight in number 3
was the film missing Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom?not a chance
was the film missing Gore Verbinsky?..again,I don't think so,i really don't think he could of done a better job than what Rob Marshall did(equal maybe sure)
the overall script i thought could of been better...but in the end,did you enjoy the first 3 films?..yeah?..then you will enjoy this one i am sure

8 out of 10 Metal Orphans(damn,i am turning into Eurogamer)

Do you think there is anything in it that is inappropriate for a 7 year old kid (my daughter)? Anything that might scare the bejeebus out of her? She loved the first one but has only seen bits and pieces of the 2nd and 3rd movies. She loves Capt. Jack and really wants to go see the new movie.

After part 3, I think I'm pretty Pirate-d out.  Debating on whether to go see this or not.

On a side note, did any of you see the SNL digital shorts video with Michael Bolton loving Pirates?  I can't get that out of my head lol.
