So, we're a few minutes from the "absolutely at the latest" 8pm EST/5pm PST time and it's still not back up.

The unpredictability of OO has actually benefited me; I've rejoined active participation in my grad school's "members only" forum and am reconnecting with old friends in more than just an "how's it going" email way. It is refreshing to get back to having active online dialogues with people that are not trying to refute or disagree with everything  posted. There's no jumping into threads to announce your lack of interest in the thread's topic, no "it was 2003, not 2002, and it was in Berkeley, not San Francisco, idiot" posts.

But I don't talk about gaming there. I know I'm probably not the only gamer there - although I must admit, I'm more of a game buyer now, than a game player.  I pretty much just sample a game; in a way it's an expensive hobby: even paying $10 to $20 (since I usually buy on sale or months after release) is expensive when half the games I buy I don't play, and those I do play, I mostly just play briefly, even if they're interesting.

Gaming's just not so important to me anymore I guess. I'll sit down and try a game and can't stop thinking "Hmmm....shouldn't I finish that status report for tomorrow? Or get an hour on the stairmaster at the gym? Or read the last two chapters of..."

OO's offline status is helping get that gaming monkey off my back!

And you find this to be the case at OO? Strange, I've found OO to have the least amount of that stuff of any place I've visited on the internet.

My recommendation to you is to start playing the demos if your game playing is getting that sporadic.  Bite-sized chunks of games for free.  What could be better?

A free demo is even more sensible. ( icon_biggrin But then the demo convinces me that the $6.48 clearance price at Target is a good deal!)

I've been seeing this intermittently since a software version upgrade last week. The software maker told me to turn on persistent connections, and that seemed to help for a few days. My web host said to make sure I'm not using persistent connections. I don't know whom to believe. It seized up on me today when I added some tracking code to the order confirmation page and put through some test transactions...but that might have just been a coincidence; it was working fine again half an hour later (with the tracking code in place).

The contract developer who performed the upgrades will referee between the host and the software publisher when I reach an impasse. But it's a very slow-motion process. It's way outside my amateur software knowledge, anyway.

Man that sucks...I hope you get it worked out.  It could be anything from the host (I'm assuming OO is on a shared server) limiting the connections, to misconfiguration in the config.php, to directories not having the right permission...hopefully they can run some testing/monitoring to see where the problem is occurring.  If its a server configuration or directory/file permission problem even moving to a dedicated host will not help OO.

I'm pretty sure it was up and running earlier today, so it's apparently a more recent failure.

As usual, I'm sure it will come back up and no one there will bother talking about why this keeps happening to OO.  Just like all the big plans for revitalizing the site have been quickly forgotten.

Interesting.  The direct IP link works, but the text link doesn't for me at all.

http://98.175.67.242/forum/

Edit: OO also seems to have had very few posts today, so I wonder if the access issue is more widespread that might be thought.  Anyway, I'm guessing that maybe something happened related to the issues in Louisianna and that the net hasn't fully updated, causing problems.
